G'day. I have to remove the nut from the rear axle to get to the brake cylinder to do some re-conditioning. I was wondering what size socket is needed to remove the nut on a 65 squareback?

I think it's still a 36 MM nut, probably wrong though!

Sounds about right. I've used a 1"1/4 with some sucess on my notch but the squareback seems to have a larger nut on it (or my socket has shrunk?). Just trying to get a more accurate idea so I don't waste un-necessary finances on the wrong size (like I need an excuse to buy tools I don't need anyway! lol).

Notch nut, do measure the nut first, idiots guide says "All models used to have a 36mm nut (1-7/16'') but now they come in three different sizes."

I have neva heard of anyone saying they have had any different than 36mm though, so brenton's on the money.

If you were in Brisbane I'd lend you my 3/4 inch drive socket set and f**king massive breaker bar (About 3 feet long!)
But oh well!

Measured the nut and it was about 1" 3/8ths in inches hence why my previous socket didn't fit. I am not sure on what the metric measurement would be. Probably easier to use an imperial socket but I would prefer the metric conversion. (just to be anal about it!🤓). It's a side project that according to my g/f doesn't exist since she wasn't involved in the decision making process of spending my money on *another* car that I don't really *need*. tehhehehe.

Time for a quick smoke before bed time. Off to the wreckers tommorow to spend more of my money on an imaginary project. lol:party

Thanks for the help fellas.

Last time I removed the rear axle nut on my notch I used a roof rack bar from my old man's Cortina as a fulchrom (my spelling is shite!). They are a real bugger to undo!! I was nearly lifting the rear wheel off the ground without the bar but was nearly scoring the nut as I couldn't keep the socket on the nut properly. I could do a cannonball run to your place on the bike but I have had a few too many :beer:beer:beer and would probably have to stop somewhere for a few more on the way and hence be late!!. Maybe next time!!

Get one of those Empi spanner thingies that you hit with a big hammer. It always works for me and it can be carried when you take big trips.
