Um, my '74 1800 kombi has been sitting for a coupla months and when i tried to start her up today for a trip around the block, well, all i got was a severe ratcheting sound from the starter :-(
Yep, the battery was pretty flat, so I used my jump starter pack and still same... then onto jumping it off 4wd... same, so tried a coupla hits in case there was shite in there and finally a look at the service manual, shorting the starter, checking the rest of the electrics (lights when turning over for dimming) BUT STILL THE DAMNED RACHETING SOUND FROM THE STARTER :-S
Any hints out there before ripping it out?
Tried pushing it foward and in reverse in case starter wasn't meshing, still same prob.

Take it out and bin it... 5 mins. Put another in
(thats what i did!)
just a suggestion
try turning your motor over with a shifter on the alternator nut, maybe the motor is locked up, has happened to me, also check your oil level if it is very high and smells of fuel it means petrol has entered the crank case and could also be sitting above a piston causing the motor to lock up.
yeah, that noise is usually flat battery - solenoid trying to fire but not engaging fully. its when that noise stops that your in trouble. try what kombidaze said, and make sure you had your jump start hooked up properly, there should have been a noticable difference in the brightness of dash lights, volume of noise etc. it is quite easy to not connect either end of your jumpers adequately which can result in it havign practically no effect at all.

Cool, will check that out...
Battery is bloody hard to get to at the best of times.
The 4WD alt puts out about 17 volts (according to metre) and should have had some effect jumping off of it :-|
Will turn motor as well...
