Hi there guys,
Boris the '67 Beetle 1300 is driving me nuts!
Just wondering the approximate cost I would be expected to pay for a 6v to 12v conversion. I only use Boris for cruising etc. but 6v is a bloody hassle as it is not started every day, plus I wouldn't mind a bit of music when cruising. The other problem I am having is that there appears to be a problem with the electrics somewhere along the line as I have had 2 batteries pop on me(???!!!) in the last 4 weeks.
I am incapable of doing the conversion myself as I am not a mechanic at all. Any info would be appreciated

if you can undo and do up bolts and screws etc, change bulbs and follow instructions you can do it.

There's a few threads on here about it. I had one going as did Sam - vwfool. Have a look through those. Both of them contain details on what needs to be done and approximate costs.

yeah there is not much that really needs to be done... just lots of little things that you need to consider. easy enough to do yourself.
just depends on whether you wanna go full 12v and do the starter motor or leave that and run the original 6v starter on 12volt - which just means it turns the motor over quicker for easier starts but at the same time you damage the flywheel teeth or starter teeth.

oh.. if you are destroying batteries or they are just going flat then get that fixed before you go to 12v as the problem will still be there.

keep 6V and keep it plugged into a good quality 'float' charger in between uses

It will probally cost you around $1000 in parts if you havent worked it out yet plus you will have to pull the motor to change flywheel and bushes etc

Battery $120
Generator $200
generator stand
Coil $75
Regulator $100
Globes $70
Starter $200
flywheel
starter bush
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

If paying $200 for a generator and $100 for a reg, it makes a lot more sense to me to get a bosch alternator. For less than the price of those two items! Alt and stand just over $300.
You will get globes for around $20 tops (H4 headlights and all the others), coil$ $40 (bosch), battery $80 (sunken termainal)
If you choose to change flywheel/starter (ideal) you will find s/h items to do the job and get a new bush $5
I have done a a few of these, and including the labour to do it I never charged anywhere near $1000.
Hope this gives you an idea on a reasonable cost.

call george at classicveedub for parts too...
It is possible your reg is not working on your genny and is overcharging the battery to cause them to 'pop'.
