The driver was not all that smart sitting right in front of a fuel tank with a smoking, red hot, dying engine behind it. 🙄

yes. it was revving at it's max, without oil, to prove how reliable the old engines are.

that engine was rebuilt, and brought back for the next show.

it's a yearly event i believe...happened at the 2005 vw nats in sydney, caus i took a video of that one...

best vw engine blow was the one back at 90 or 91 vintage volkswagen classic
a few ppl put bets on how long, longest was 10mins
it was a 40horse with a rooted big end bearing
after the coil overheated and it ran out of fuel it finally died after 52mins :thumb

she was pretty shagged inc snapped conrods but the buggerd bearing was still ok LOL

I've thankfully never seen a VW motor suffer like that first hand... But I have experienced a Crummydore v6 eating itself alive. Was when I had my workshop, a guy called me in desperation because the local Holden dealership workshop refused to help him because he had the ordacity to rebuild the motor himself. He just couldn't figure out the wiring and intake components, and just wanted someone to get it running for him. Well, we had it running within about an hour and it was dead about 20 seconds after that... LOL

He assured me, after much questioning from me before touching it, that he knew what he was doing, had taken his time, and his mate that did the torquing of all the bolts was a pro. Hmm, a pro with a few too many beers under his belt while doing the job (I asked him about this afterwards and he admitted my assumption was right).

We went over the engine bay quite easily and got everything connected and plugged, then got fuel up to it and fired her up... I stood over the engine bay so I could hear what the motor was up to and got to hear the show up close. after about 15 seconds (at about 2000 rpm, because the computer hadn't been set yet) she suddenly and very rapidly developed a deathly knock in the bottom end. In the time it took me to raise my hand and signal a shutdown, the engine had done it all by itself. Locked up real hard she did. Sounded like a truck ramming a wall.

As soon as our hearts slowed down a bit i dived under the car and knocked on the sump. My offsider asked what I was up to and I told him "checking how many big ends are bouncing around in the sump". I guessed at two of them, and after trying to turn the motor over by hand I was pretty sure the middle two were the ones that let go, which made sense as I pondered the chances of the goon doing the tensioning tightening two caps, going around the other end and doing the others from that end but forgetting he hadden't done the middle two.

After getting the owner back in and breaking the news to him, he asked us to fix it any way we could as he needed the car the following afternoon for a trip. When we popped the donk out and pulled the sump it was quite nasty. Within a few minutes we'd found the crank, block, two conrods and two of his new TRW pistons were faaarked. We got hold of another motor from the wreckers that evening (had already ordered gaskets so they'd arrive in the morning), pulled the heads and sump etc. (as he wanted to keep his worked heads and cam) and checked what this "new" motor was like. Well, it had a bit of piston slap and totally shagged cam bearings, which were down to bear scratched up copper. So I rubbed some lead unto the cam bearings (lead sinker jammed on end of screwdriver), bunged her back together and had it back in the car by lunchtime the next day. I don't normally do rough shit like that, but the guy was desperate and cared more about the car doing the day trip than if it would chew itself to bits in the days afterwards.

We got her up and running, set the computer up (no diagnostic machine in my workshop, we worked on older cars) and took her for a spin around the workshop. All seemed fine, called the guy, he came in and took her round the block, was VERY relieved and greatful, paid me a little more than I quted him and off he went. I don't know where that car is now, but I caught up with the guy more than a year after I did the job and he said the car still runs fine, he's happy enough with it and it hasn't needed anything done since the "rebuild"...

Moral of the story? "Tighten ALL the bolts BEFORE hitting the piss"...

It's always a worry when more smoke comes from the engine than the exhaust!
