Can a Desiel oil cooled turbo be used for a drawthrough system ?

Looking at using a Garret A/R 48 turbo.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I've got a diesel turbo being rebuilt for my 1641.
A mate knows a turbo guy says although it came off a 3lt diesel tractor. These are slow revving but will suit the application. ( boost 2500rpm - 6000rpm)
He is overhauling it and fitting a carbon seal for a draw thru. Not sure of any other info yet i'm leaving it to the experts, but I should have it later this week.
I'll let you know what I can.

The earliest turbo conversions in australia done by shimmo ex/hellbug were using IHI turbo's from diesal trucks. Compatibility with draw thru setups will be determined by the type of seal behind the compressor wheel.

Some turbo's are designed solely for blow thru systems, and if used in pull thru will suck oil out of the bearing housing into the compressor housing when the engine is idling or when you shift gears.

Your best to to either google the hell out of the model number of the turbo you've scored, or take it to a reputable turbo rebuilder and ask them to check it out for you and mention you want to use it in a pull thru configuration.

Good luck, turbo's rock!

The answer to your original question is it depends on what size and rpm deisel it came from.

If its a garrett, go to their website and compare the compressor and turbine maps along with your CFM you will need for your setup.

AFAIK, deisel spec turbines are usually quite small in comparison to their compressors. So tend to spool early but become restrictive high up in comparison to their compressors on a higher revving petrol engine.
However, they will work well enough if matched close enough to the application and plenty do.

A/R .48 (area to radius ratio) is only relevant to a particular turbo size/spec. and applies to compressors as well as turbines.

You can have an A/R of .48 on a tiny turbo of a 600cc Jap import (Suzuki Cappucino I think) or off a monster 2000Hp turbo.
