POR15 i'd say.... once you treat it with that (or RustBullet) I don't think rust is ever going to be an issue again. You should probably see if it's going to cope with the heat in the channels though. You don't want it stinking out the cabin!

Hi,
I have used about 4 litres of Deodorised Fish Oil in My body and chassis...
I poured, brushed and squirted it everywhere...
it doesn't take too long to dry in this weather...
just don't use it on wet metal...
it spreads out like oil going into evey nook and cranny..
so, it really covers everything..

I gave My car lots of coats of fish oil...
painted just about everything - under the guards..
heater channels - tunnel - front end..

after it was fully dry, I then painted parts that were accessible with kilrust paint...
probably not needed but I had some on hand...

I coated around the front and rear window sills a few times, so if any water gets under the rubbers it won't rust..
cheers

Hi,

fish oil looks and runs like oil...
then goes semi hard... and then hard..
if there are holes in the bottom, it will run out..

so, I just put paper under each hole ..
to catch any drips..

Fish oil seals the metal so no air or moisture can contact
the metal...
so no rust...

Killrust is the best brand..
I also used motorpro brand pressure pack fish oil to spray into holes... I like to give everything a few coats..

the cheap fish oil in pressure pack cans is rubbish...

cheers

I have been restoring VW's for 20 years and would have to agree with Lee , fish oil is the way to go . I have always used this method and never get cars back for rust repairs after we have restored them .

Can you expand on this? What methods do you use?

Can anyone elaborate - do you put fish oil on first and let it dry and THEN paint over it or the other way around?
I want to sand back some slight surface rust under the body (floors mainly) and want to make sure of a good job first time.
Cheers

Yes, Fish oil will dry and stops any air or moisture from attacking the metal or weld...

You can paint it once its dry...
although there is no need to...

yes you can, it slows it from getting worse by stopping air and moisture getting to the metal.

Have you ever seen a rusty fish?

So let me get this straight - you can spray it ON TOP of paint in the nooks and crannies so it'll penetrate any areas that might not be properly sealed by the paint?

Yep
Brush , spray or pour fish oil everywhere...
it doesn't hurt anything...
just seals the air and moisture out...

no air... no Rust...

just make sure You don't use it on wet surfaces...

I used 4 litres plus many spray cans of fish oil on My beetle
including the heater channels and the centre tunnel and front end...
I gave everything a few coats... inside the doors..

behind the door hinges is very important
as under the windscreen rubber of VWs there are drain holes for any water that gets under the rubber to go thru
and any water goes down behind the hinges...

Fish oil will mark acrylic paint if it is left on it. Have seen a few cars where the fish oil has dripped out of the doors, run down the sill panel (not applicable to beetles so to speak) and mark the sill panel.

This is only if you don't wipe up the excess just after applying it.

I give it a thumbs up, just a thing to look out for.

the other advantage to fish/lanolin oils if you need to do repairs down the track ie rust or beating you can weld or beat without dealing with body deadeners .

yeah good point - I know a 4WD dude who swears by this stuff as being 21st century fish oil. He reckons it's good enough to stop bare metal rusting in salt water!
