As some of ya may know... i got a semi auto baja cooking in the oven... just needs the Automatic transmission fluid plumbing done (stuff that goes into the torque convertor or the transmission 😉)
I got the lines... the original ones... but cause the baja conversion involved the chopping off of the rear apron... I had to say goodbye to my original mounts for the Transmission fluid reservoir... sooooo.... i put it in my parcel tray... 😀 Kool... it fits, works nicely... right above the gear box... to the right hand side of the car. Due to its position... i need to get some new lines... so i thought... kool, shouldn't be too bad
Wadda ya know... i go to PIRTEK in springwood, they haven't got all the ends that I need, so couldn't help, I go to PIRTEK in salisbury, no good either, i go to a wreckers that happens to be on the way to the train station, salisbury again, no bugs wat so eva... and here happens to be a VW / VOLVO place that specialises in classic vee dub s there, gorgeous bugs outside... i go in there, they got NOFFIN! like that at all....
Pirtek had some other options for me... but... the prices they were asking were equivalent of what i rekon i could get for a working manual transmission and engine... more money then i originally paid for the project ages ago.
Don't u just hate having a 'more limited' transmission? I don't want to say rare hehe... cause Pete might pop in to say hi 😀, the dudes at pirtek said i was looking for some heck rare components, he suggested using nipples... as delicious as it sounded... the prices added up, and they didn't have the appropriate tubing the guy suggested best for my purpose....
Someone once said to me... if the ATF pump on my engine died... goodluck trying to find another to replace it. are these things that rare? I have all the original tubes... cept am missing 2 of the banjo bolts... and one of the leads is missing an end (cause the previous owner cut off the pipe before removing he engine)
you kg owners have probs like this?

69' baja: kombi box, thing spindles, irs, disc front, type 3 rear drums, 2 inch lift kit, 31x10 rears. 👍
New engine in process: 94mm p&bs, 74mm C/w chomol Crank, 35.5x39 SP heads, turbo. Wierd combo, hopeful torque monsta!
btw, need new lines cause the original ones... 2 outa the 3 are too short to reach the reservoir... and that other line has the other end MIA from the previous owner...

Is there anywhere else to mount the reservoir?? You might be able to use original lines then.
Beach Buggy

just use some transmission piping from an auto car and you can get rubber trans pipe from auto parts stores that only need to have clamps on..would have to look at the bug out the back to see how hard it would be to re-route the plumbing❓

You should feel sorry for 411 owners......no parts available for manual gearboxes....anywhere. Are you talking high pressure lines or low pressure?? Post a picture of the fittings you have/schematic of the setup and do some brain storming. Can't be that hard.Consider moving your reservior???

Yeah... i'm still looking into it... Those porsche fellas... even if they had gear available would have the joy of paying an arm and a leg for it 😀
I have thought about moving he reservoir to another location... was thinking more closer to the original position, maybe mounted on the baja bar work... prob is... my barwork don't fit. Got it from my 67 baja, even the front bar mounts don't fit, due to the mounts (where they go over the 2 front torsion beams) is shorter on the k&l then the ball joint. so would require me to get a more heavy duty welder... (arc for the thicker stuff cause my weak mig is having piss trouble welding together an old cannon exhaust, just chewing up heaps of wire and neah...)
so its more great work.. 🙁
I wouldn't reuse the original lines... well not mine, but if i bought some originals from someone else, then possibly yes. the steel braiding on one of my lines is coming apart... and a steel tube from the pump has a kink... + the line with the chopped end... 🙁 the only worry i have with having the reservoir on the barwork, outside the car is that originally the reservoir and lines were protected by tinwear and body metal, now that most of that is gone, the lines would be open to be getting caught on bushes, shubbery, get knocked by rocks etc... especially with the atf pump being on the far bottom/back of engine. and if a line gets destroyed, then no atf circuit, no atf circuit... no going home 🙁

Chris,
do we need to pass the hat around AVD to get you out of your predicament ?

🙁
I mean 411 as in VW.
Rubber hose must be looking good about now.I wouldn't worry about branches etc hitting anything.Just get the damn thing working and refine it later otherwise you'll end up running around in circles and achieve nothing.Put things where they fit, connect up what you can.Get bolts with the correct thread and make your own banjos by getting a machine shop to drill them,or a friend with a drill press.Reconnect lines (low pressure) with correct grade rubber lines and get it working.Move stuff later.:beer

Nope, but some people have been through these situations, and talking, suggestions, advice, and wisdom does help the process of reaching a solution
🙂 Esp. to a prob like this. Well... its had that affect for me, and same goes for motivation wise, and therefore, its been successful, and mentally i'm betta then when i started.
😀
Don't worry, I'm a nutcase...
Soz mick, yeah, the vw 411s... ouch... does anyone like empi or wateva do anything at alll for that model?

Perhaps it might be easier to make new rear barwork with a spot for the reservoir that has some plating around it for protection.

Hi Chris. Welcome to the world of car modification.
Chris,
Tell me which banjos you are missing and I'll hack and slash with the lathe and oxy/mig. Might take a week or two as it'll be a spare time job in between rewiring another guys beetle.
Ditto I can have a go at making some metric to SAE adapters so you can get some garden variety hoses to bolt on. You'll feed me Bourbon & Coke if we run into each other!

U sure man? after wednesday, will have a little more money, revisit pirtek at springwood, if no luck... well, i don't like to put obligations on people, (some mental prob i have), but will keep in touch anyways
Trust me... for the price pirtek might be asking next time i call in... i might be able to get u alot of bourbon and coke for half that, hehe ! 😀
The lengths of lines i need are scary... :S I did a little diagram at uni on paint... the line in from the reservoir to the pump needs to be 1.6 metres...unless i use the original steel tubing, which isn't destroyed... it has to feed around that way cause the pump intake in on that side, + if i tried to wrap the line around to go the other way from the intake, to the right hand side, it couldn't be too tight of a turn, otherwise it would kink, and being so, would be vulnerable to the crank pully, or if hanging down, can get hooked...
am still thinking of ideas though...
all those other lines need to be 0.9 metres... probably y it ads up in $$ I'm sure having the line so long isn't too good either...

I'm missing the large banjo bolt that goes from the tranny to the reservoir, the 'chode' big one... and i'm missing the banjo bolt underneith the reservoir... + i'm missing the washers... to those 2....
🙁 Dam..

Chris,
"A" and "B" are arse about. Bottom of reservoir should go to the drivers side of the pump.
Passenger side of pump feeds trans.
Rethink that diagram and make sure you measure again!!
The reservoir to pump line just needs to withstand heat, not pressure.
If you still have the steel line from pump to trans, they (Pirtek) should be able to weld a fitting on the end.
A hammer can take the kink out of the line!! I did it with my reservoir to pump steel line which was slightly mangled.
Banjo Bolts? No probs..just some mucking around.
Ctefeh
cheers Ctefeh, will overlook my bits again
Just wish i could buy the stuff, and make the hoses myself at home, so i could muck around with the ends and tubing there... Apparently though the crimping tools they use aren't necessarily a common household item...

would it be legal to have it inside the car?
no idea... was just thinking after i typed in my last post... i got some inwear still on the engine... y don't i just weld mounts off that for the reservoir and vacuum cylinder, then i can maintain the rear space for storage, and wouldn't need rediculously long leads, and could just buy someones 2nd hand originals....

Spend the time and money on doing it neat and right. It will look better as well. If it were me I would get steel lines bent up to suit. The A line would need to be 2 sections with flexible hose in between, the B could be 1 piece though might be easier to fit if in 2 sections.
You might need to find alternative supply than Enzed, Pirtek etc. They are kinda like the supercheap auto of hydraulics. Go a little up market with a company like Stauff. They had the banjo's that I needed for the vw/audi turbo. Its probably a little easier for me to say since I live in an industrial city but that is what I would do.
thanx for the advice chris,
Yeah, ur right. they come across that way. There are heaps of hydraulic places i'm yet to check out, the bits gotta be around somewhere... still thinking of mounting options for my gear, be nice to clear out the parcel tray in the rear,
Still thinking of having the canisters outside the back somewhere, although it would look as though my car has testicles, it should be kool. Atleast if there happens to be a leak in the tubes, it won't spill hot goo all over my interior. Be nice if the car was still on my property, woulda came to a solution by now... lol.
