I'm looking to fit my Kombi 2L into my Baja Bug soon, but I'm wondering what everyone does for the Fuel pump cutoff. It looks like I'll have to go with an electric fuel pump as there isnt room for the stock mechanical pump. But what do I do to get the fuel pump to shut off if the engine stalls but key is left on....ie...had a crash and cant turn the key off?

Any help appreciated.

U could wire a relay through ur generator or alternator... so that if it stalls, the generator or alternator (depending on what u got on ur engine) will obviously not be making any current... so therefore the relay would switch off, and therefore could cut off the fuel pump circuit...

The only prob is the fuel pump won't go on when u start the engine straight away, it would be the starter motor first, and when it turns the gene or alt. and makes current, then the fuel pump would go on, then start the engine. The relay's can be pretty twitchy and quick to react to small currents, so this delay of the fuel pump starting should HOPEFULLY be minor...

I would give ya a hand if ya wanted some help... had fun playing with these relays recently for my ignition... Just sux ur northside though... but its not like its impossible to reach.

i use oil pressure sender
charge light wire can come on sometimes at night when really loaded up
and connecting str8 to the genny can kill some cheaper relays as it is unregulated power

regarding start up, unless the car has sat unstarted for more than a couple of weeks the fuel bowls have enuff fuel to kick them over

but as my bug can sit for weeks as at a time undriven i put in a primer switch

good luck

wire (via relays) the fuel pump to the starter circuit to provide fuel when cranking, then to the oil pressure circuit to allow pump to run, and provide cut-out for engine stall situation

Good thinking, BTW

Hey Grahame,

If you can get your hands on one of the 'tri-clicks' relays as found on Bosh L jetronic vehicles, that would be ideal.

The relay takes inputs from the ign on, start circuit and -ve of the coil so the pump is provided with power only:

- for ~ 1.5 secs when you turn the ignition on (prime)
- when starting (cranking)
- when the engine is turning over ~ 150 rpm (from -ve coil dizzy.

The relay has about 6 or 7 wires going to/from it, so it is a bit of work to wire, but a good end finish.

You can get them off old EFI VK commodores, old volvos, and some camiras (Make sure you cut the plug out too). Not sure if they were on L-jet kombis but probably.

Graham, you could use a oil pressure switch from a late 80's Holden.

They have 3 terminals: one for the oil pressure warning light (shorts to ground when there is no oil pressure - same as standard switch), and the other two act as a switch for the fuel pump (they join together when there is oil pressure).

To get around the priming problem, also connect a 'bypass' wire to the start terminal of your ignition switch. In this way, the fuel pump will run when you are cranking the engine over, then it will continue to run once you have oil pressure.

These switches can be found in VP, VN (and later) Commodores, JE Camiras, N13 Pulsars and Astras and other models from the same era.

An interesting side note: Although wired up on all the models that I just mentioned, the ECU controls the fuel pump, so this switch has absolutly no effect whatsoever in the Holdens - Holden finally realised this with the later models and although the wiring is still there (3 wires to the oil pressure switch) the switch itself only has the terminal for the warning light :duh

Hope this helps.
