hi all, ok i have a 1966 kombi and am looking to build/buy a stong reliable motor to push it along. i want it to be happy cruizing at 70mph which would be at just over 3000rpm with the current drive line fitted. what would you recommend? there seems to be so many options out there. i'm not after fast acceleration, more into reliabilty and cruizing but dont want no slug either! whats your advice?cheers, dave.
A young fella i know is trying to squeeze a WRX into his splitty...
A stocko 1600 would do that. Then add Kadron twin carbies for a bit more ooomph. Then... well depends on how much $ you wanna spend!
Pay your debts, CxxT
definatley want to keep air cooled. 1600 just seemed a bit on the small side when the camper is fully loaded for a trip, not decided on a budget yet!!
want reliable, strong, aircooled, no slug, and all in a bus?
Wow that makes it difficult if you dont want to spend $3000 or so.
If a 1600 with Kadrons is not enough, maybe a Type 4 engine from a later bus. 2.0litre with twin Kadrons, or fuel injection. Maybe aftermarket computer contolled injection. Failing that, a Subaru EJ22 is sweet on the road, but not aircooled so forget that one.
i drove my single cab 62 with a stock 1600 she went fine even loaded with furniture
but mind you im up grading to a 2017cc because im greedy for power and with all the camping stuff you have id look at a 1776cc twin kads, solid reliable.
show us your gates
I can cruise all day at 70 - 80 mph in my splitty, as I have a L bug box with the IRS conversion this gives me really long legs
totally recommend spending money on the running gear first
Keeping it real !
allready got irs, not sure what box though as it was fitted to the van when i got it, seems ok though.
yeah was considering type 4 power havnt decided on budget yet so its still in the running. thanks for your replies, just wanted to hear what everyone else thought and get some ideas as to which way to go. cheers, dave.
Just did the run back to Sydney from Nelsons Bay in about 2 hours. Fully loaded with a good 300 kilos of gear ... happy cruising at 66-70mph - which is about 100/110 kmh ... runs round to the oil light if you want to ... lol ... a mere 1600 Twin Port running Lbug Single Side plate. Stock carbies and motor. Cheap as ... ran from Sydney to Old Bar on less than a tank of gas doing average 60mph.
However, hier Muller flew past me today and Tonys bus also hammers along ... not sure what they are running ... but those boys pull 140kmh with ease.

Tony's bus is a 2165 I think. I yes it really goes.
Personally, I'd go a bog stock 2l type 4. Convert it to upright and wack on an extra oil cooler, maybe some kadrons and a decent exhaust. The closer to stock it is the longer it will last.
The lbug box is a single sideplate box that comes out of the late curved screen macpherson strut 1303 beetle. You can pick up for as little as $150 bucks from a wreckers. great for the freeway.
There's a decent bit of work involved in converting to typeIV. I've a 1776 in my splitty, twin carbies. Goes nice, but it has a different driving style to the Bay with its bog stock tired old 1800. In some ways, I prefer the way the Bay drives (gee I hope Dave (PO) doesn't read this!🙄)
If you are up for it, the typeIV would be grouss - just make sure all the sealing tin, etc... is fitted properly: I've seen some without the engine seal all around, surely can't be too good!
Cheers, A.
Is anyone running oil coolers with the 1776's and bigger or do they perform well without them.
PS sorry to hijak.
Aaron
jaksc, i had a 1776 in a beetle (i own a bay but haven't picked it up yet...), it was only a mild 1776, stock heads, cam similar to an engle 100, kadrons and non merged extractors. it had a full flow filter for a while (thats another story) but just ran the stock doghouse oil cooler.
in a 63 shell with stock engine lid it ran a little warm (even when i finally got it running ok), but after adding a standoff kit made by one of the people on this forum (and given to me as it was an old version, thanks glenn... free plug) it ran at a nice temp... it didn't get too hot even when i flogged the cr@p out of it, which was from once it was warmed up till when it was parked, nearly every time i drove it. even in temps over 30 degrees.
