I am currently swapping a gearbox in my beetle. the box I am putting in has the 3 aluminium plugs missing, behind one of these is supposed to be the detent ball spring and plunger......
I thought I would take the ones out of my old box (ruined 2 doing it ) but there was no spring, ball or plunger in my old box ( this was a rebuilt box not original)
My question is do you need them??
I think as my old box didn't have them then they are not necessary
Could someone put me straight
where can I get two new plugs??

Silver,
The spring and ball are located BEHIND the shaft you see when looking into the hole after removal of the aluminium plugs.
To change them requires the complete dismantling of the gearbox
Normally these dont fail, but an external check can be made by changing gears using the selector shaft and feeling for a positive and somewhat spring loaded engagement of each gear
