Just did round about trip from Syd to Bris and Kombi didnt miss a beat, well almost. 100km from home and stopped for a feed. Came out and car wouldnt start. Get all the red lights etc in dash but gave that "auto in drive" no repsonse type of feeling. Just wouldnt turn over. My friendly mobile mechanic (VWCOOL) said to hot wire on the starter which did the trick to get me home.
Stopped in the driveway then tried to start it, worked first go by the key! Its a 73 Bay, what do you think could be possible problems, and what is the configuration on the switch? Is it a terminal type where something could have come loose and then grounded again? Do you access the ignition by undoing 4 phillip head screws holding a plate underside of stearing column?
Thanks.

How many sets of lights does it take a $229k Carrera S to learn? 😂 UPDATE: Cayman S, M3, B4 now added to the list.
same thing happened to my 86 caravel so i fitted a switch to the startr just in case has not happened again the wire that pushes on was a bit loose when i checked but your right about the ignition it a through aay part at the base of the key section and they do wear out my old 71 did it to me simple fix unscrew unplug
👍👍😂🙅🥷😬🤓
Sounds like the same problem we had. Start the car one time its fine then next time it doesnt even turn over. The starter motor is on its way out. We went to auto elec and he put a relay in the wiring so power goes directly to starter when you turn the key (gives more direct power) insted of going to the front of the car and back again. Auto elec knows how its wired up (not me).
Ours was done two years ago and works great

Common bay bus problem is the terminals for the starter contact in the ignition become faulty. We fitted a high amp starter button in ours. A starter relay is also a good idea.
My key was making a bad contact so installed pushbutton and a relay...no probs now:thumb
Wow i'm a "seriously cruisin dubber" now(100 posts)...like i wasn't before 👍 ...in fact i want to stay seriously cruisin forever! c'mon Blue Bus...3 to go.. you can do it! oops...back to the starter...
yeah, if you have to push the key all the way to the extreme to get it to fire when it does work, time for a button, i talket to my mech about this a while back, there were replacement barrels made, but they were made so poorly that some didnt even contact from new :o

Yep... and besides... pushbuttons are WAAAAAY cool! 😀 👍 😎
Most bays have a button start now so nothing to be ashamed of! 😂

yeah macca, you might recall the starter button and ignition switch in between the seats in my Oval - I fitted that due to the same problem you had
Bypass the ignition switch and it can't give any more dramas; 99% that's what the drama is with yours - worn key barrel
Pay your debts, CxxT
our 74 bay just developed the same problem installed a push button plus a 15 amp relay the button only needs small guage 3-5 amp wire to trigger relay which is mounted near the starter motor this web site has the relay wiring diagram
http://www.ratwell.com/ he calls it a hot start relay
sometimes mine does it too, i just let it roll forward a bit with clutch in, let it out for a second, then stop, this moves the starter round to another position and it turns over, starter starting to go on the way out, failing that, roll start it 👍
