On a 68 built Fasty, should the body moulding be wide or thin?

The basic rule is

If its 4 stud n disc brakes then its the thin trim

5 stud and drums have the wide SS trim and wide lower strip
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

Mine's a Dec '68 Fasty with June '69 Engine.... it has side trim that's a bit less than 1cm thick, and the lower trim is almost 2cm thick.

Correct.... if its wide five.... wide strips......
The strips down the bottom didnt change at all....

Only the Deluxe models had the strips under the doors.
Also chrome on the seats( the bracket for the upper part of the seat) and the adjusters. Most deluxe fasties had popouts and some even had sunroof's( mosty after late 70).
Bonnet trim and rear reflectors were included, up to late 65 early 66 they had bullet style later changing to the wrap-around till late 69 for the changeover to the long-nose.

My 68 notchback came with wide 5 drums all round and swing axles (unusual I know!) yet it has the narrower chrome and the bullet indicators. Also has a wider strip running along the sill.
I think I got a bitza!

I belive they stoped production in 1967, in Melbourne, and just used leftover parts for 68 so you could use either.

Thats interesting... My 68 type 1 has 12v from factory but lowback seats, 6v door trims, 12v inside door handles and winders and thin trims. Have changed just about everything cosmetic to pre 68 or 6 volt styling. Everytime I ordered parts I had to be careful. So 68 was a mixed year for my car but I will always prefer a 69 any day....

Midway thru 68 they went to 12v....

offically 69 was the year for 12v and the full auto...

You cant expect them to ditch extra 6v stuff just because they went to 12v. they just used it up.

Good grief! I am confused. My understanding was that the 64 models on were assembled here in OZ and came with all hidden areas unpainted to ensure they rusted!!

>up to late 65 early 66 they had bullet style later changing to the wrap-around till late 69 for the changeover to the long-nose.<

All FASTBACKS (up to 1969) had the wrap around front indicators and longer chrome rear reflector housings as well as bumper overriders. If they had bullet style, someone has changed the front guards for Notch/Squareback ones from up to 68 model. The exterior trim on the fastbacks was a continuation of the fully built in Germany 1500S. The thin side strips started around 68 through to the end of the 69 model. (Yes, the thin ones did continue on the 70-73 models).

Only deluxe models came with overriders....

From memory the first fastback wasnt till 65.

And excert from history...

In September of 1961, Volkswagen announced that they would be producing a new car--labeled the VW 1500. The car would share very little in common with the Beetle. The engine was to be rear-engined, air-cooled 1498cc unit which would be configured to take up less space than that of the Beetles'. The resultant car was one which was radically different than the Volkswagen's primary car. It was more conventional for the time--a "three box" design, one that was actually pleasing to the eye. The first model of this new line was a standard looking sedan. It would eventually earn the nickname "Notchback." Released around the same time as the Notchback, another Type 3 variety was called the "Squareback." As one might fathom, it was the model of the line which we in America would refer to as the station wagon. The Germans, however, called the Type 2, Bus, the station wagon. The squareback was called the Varient--it would prove to be the longest running model of the Type 3 line.

In August of 1965, a third Type 3 joined the other two. It was aptly named the "Fastback" because of its sportscar fastback style. The cars were all tastefully designed and well proportioned. They were produced until 1973.

As for the bullets.... early fasties had them as prototype and using the same bodywork as the squares.... were used till the wraps came round...

It's an "8". The trim on there at the moment is a plastic after market jobbie. I can only imagine someone removed the original 'cos it was bent/dented and did a quick "this stuff will do" replacement. The holes are underneath for the moulding.
I'll get the chassis no. tomorrow Empster.

68s have trigger doorhandles , black fresh air vent levers , a liftup doolock thingy diffrent fresh air vents reinforced frontbumper, usually 4 stud disc brakes , and black rubber dash knobs. sounds like your car may be a " Clayton Special" ... a bitsa car to run out stock.
A mate of mines farther worked on the production line of the type 3 back in the day , you would be suprised what went on round then . you'd also be suprised what this bloke has in his garage.... i will give u a clue ... its 1 of 16... only 2 are know to be in existance today.....

Any guesses????

There seems to be many "stories" around describing different "versions" of type 3s. The first prototypes may have had the bullet front indicators but only official photos would convince the majority. It is the production ones we are interested in and hopefully the info below will help our friend who started this thread.

With the introduction of the Fastback and indeed the whole Type 3 range benefitted from the 1600 engine from Aug 1965. The early Australian assembled/built Type 3s including the 1964 and 1965 1500S didn't have the 'delux" trim added. Only the fully imported 1500S Notch and Variant had this as well as the upmarket interior. The 1500S ceased with the introduction of the 1600 engine and the Fastback in August 1965. The Fastback retained ALL of the external delux chrome work including the wraparound front indicators and rear reflector housing from the 1500S. The upper side mouldings changed from the aluminium type of the 1500S to the later wide steel ones They also retained the extended tail light lenses which also came from the 1500S. The Australian produced ones had the simpler ignition switch where the few fully imported ones retained the assembly with the steering lock as well as the rear seat centre armrest. From memory these early Australian production Fastbacks also had fixed glass in the rear sides rather than the flex glass ones.

Over the years, many cars have been modified from original and later "enthusiasts" believe that they are original. Many of us on the forum actually watched these first Fastbacks enter the showrooms, drove them etc and were VW enthusiasts before the word became popular.

Hope this adds some help.

Steve (Empi)!! Can you confirm for me!

DH
