Does anyone know the different lengths of IRS axles.
on the following?

Kombi
Auto Kombi, Left and Right
Type 3 auto Left and Right

I reckon Holz would.

They been changing them heaps on the green beetle with the different gear boxes and box position.

think they are running 930 now

I will have a look in the shed tomorrow.
I used Type 3 auto left axles in my bug at 390mm for the bus conversion and they were 25mm shorter than bug(415mm?)

Will confirm soon....

OK
Bug is 415mm
Auto type 3 LHS is 390mm
Which makes RHS 440mm ?

I have two different unknown bus axles:
457mm (auto LHS?) and
476mm which I think is the standard length.

Found another bus axle that was 505mm.
This might be an auto bus RHS...?

For interest, a Commadore IRS is 468mm and the CV is the same spline and PCD as a 930, only not as wide.
So prob less anglular than the 930.
Good upgrade for 20BVW Kombi!

This is kind of related so I will post the pics here.

My axles are 16" length and have a "28 spline" size (90 degree spline).
I was using bus CVs up till now, in the pan car, that have the inside opened out to 28 spline,
which is the same as 930, BMW, Merc and Commadore.
I am going to fit the Commadore ones to the pan car.

The short axles in these photos are from my tube chassis car,
and were made by Romac.
They are 12" long and have 2" of spline.(28x90degree spline).

VWs have a 33 spline axle and are very strong, up to a torque rating of about 300ftlbs(guess)

You can see where I lightened the Commadore CV in the outer part.
These weigh about the same as a bus CV now.
The commadore CV is narrower, and so is lighter, but may not have the same angularity as the 930.
This is not an issue for me.

OK, a question: I'm running a sedan box with output flanges modifed to use Kombi CVs, with 2+2" (I think) trailing arms using Kombi stub, bearings etc. Having changed from standard arms to the longer/wider ones, I'll now need to get new axles, as the existing ones for the old standard arms are way too short - how do you measure the length of axle that you need ?, and when you guys have quoted lengths like 16" and 505mm is that from circlip to circlip, or complete length end-to-end ?

I have just listed the total lengths as with a tape measure.
Some people actually make up an adjustable axle for checking the required length, wth CVs in place.

I just measure the distance between the flat surface of the flanges and then add a bit each end for circlip meat.

If you can determine the difference in width,
Yf the inner race and outer race of the CV, you can factor in the length required.

Most of my setups are meant to run with minimum angle,
but off road guys need to make sure that the length is correct thru the whole suspension travel.

At its shortest length/distance, there should still be some clearance on the axle ends.

You may have to allow extra spline length so that the CV inner, can float.
Standard car CVs are normally retained firmly on the axle end.

Duh, sometimes I'm amazed at my own stupidity and lack of common sense !! Of course, given that I've two axles that I can use, why wouldn't I use them to make up an adjustable one ? I understood, and was going to take into account, all the other bits, but couldn't for the life of me figure out how to arrive at a rough length to start with.

Thanks Dave, much appreciated.

Hi

You can make a pretty good test axle with some 25 mm electrical conduit.

Ah, and even better idea, and I could sell the two axles that I now no longer need - although they're pretty much cactus.

One of these days I must learn how to think outside the box.....

Thanks Steve

These photos shoe the clearancing required for the larger 930 or Commadore CVs.

There is some clearancing on the bump stop bracket,
and there may, depending on your drive flanges, be some behind the flange,
on the flat surface, forward of the bearing hole.

And on this last photo you can see the lightening on the outer of the Commadore CV.
I did not get too radical here, so as to keep maximum strength.

I just made up the rings on the lathe and welded them onto some beetle stubs, and 2lt gearbox flanges.

The old flanges are turned down and then the new ring is shrunk on
(about 3 thou interference), and after machining a weld prep groove, fully welde, about 1 inch at a time.
After cooling, I machined enerything tru with a locating recess.
