Hi Guys,

I'm getting my Baja Exhaust bent up tomorrow morning and would appreciate your suggestions.

It is for my Baja which 1600tp. I'm looking for a dual cannon system that is seperated left and right exiting left and right but happy to listen to other suggestions. The Offroaders have given some great input thus far.

Would like to achieve a nice low note but retain the bottom end as well. There is a formula but I can't remember or find where it is.

Any recommendations on pipe size, how to bend and muffler type would be much appreciated. Expertise and discussion on own setup would be great.

Cheers,

Bronze.

I know you want cannons , but 4 into 1 will give you the best bottom end. I have used both setups.

4 into 1 gives a much better torquey bottom end and they also gives much better cruising performance in both power and economy.

Cannons are cool, but the noise can get you down after a time, wheras the quiet purr of a well tuned 4 into 1 has never annoyed me. On long distance runs cannons don't seem to run just right and the engine doesn't seem to be as well tuned as you woulf like it to be.

I usually buy a whole set up from the market. I'm sure they would be cheaper than a newly made system. I have found that bought systems always need to be fitted and even modified to work properly. A custom made system in thicker tubing may well be a better option as the elcheapos don't last for more than a few years. But why re-invent the wheel, when you can buy a complete system? All of the bends are very tight, so they will all need to be mandrel bends which are not cheap if you can't do it yourself.

I have two Baja systems. Both have 1 1/4 internal pipe size and 40 inches in lenght for each pipe to the 4 into 1 joiner and then 2 inches into the muffler.

My Baja convertible has a 2 inch hot dog which gives a suitable rumble at cruising and a very satisfying blare at full throttle.

4 into 2 into 1 is the best for torque
4 into 1 is good for mid to top end perfomance
and by changing primary and secondary lengths on both of these can change your gas flow and change power and torque curves dramatically .to shot or to long can stuff up the performance.
also by making a nice set of collectors on either set up will create more power and torque.
it all depends on the maker and there knowledge of basic gas flow.
as for hot dogs, fluted or perforated both have good and bad points ,however they are just a smaller version of a cannon.a cannon is basically a shiny resonator.ie hotdog that looks pretty.
if you tell me what you want from your exhaust.ie more torque down low.sound etc.etc
i can give you a few tips.
i have done just a little bit of testing over the years.
down sharon.

Thank guys,

I have printed out and passed on what you have said so far. I'm looking for a nice gutsy resonating tone and retaining the torque for offroading. I like the loud note but only when I'm really up it or its under a lot of load in the sand and mud.

I like the stereo type sound twin exhausts give off and it keeps the balanced look of the engine bay with two exhausts running out from either side. I have found from my experience the 4 into 1 and 4 into 2 inti 1 exhausts to be very cluttered and bulky reducing exit angles and putting the muffler into very awkward position behind, beside and below the motor.

The mechanic who is working on it is going to fabricate extractors and turn all the piping. I have had a look at his work and it is very good. He certianly knows what he is doing. But you also have a lot of experience with the 1600 and pipe lengths, diameters and gas flows so if you have anything to add I'm happy to print it again and forward it to him before he start bending tomorrow morning.

Cheers all.

In my experience with 4 into 1 where the 4 merge into 1 is a prime area for rust, the dual cannons don't have spots that can trap water/sand/salt. At the moment (:duh) I have a 4 into 1 as it's a type 4 engine and I'm married with children so I don't have the neccessary cash flow that would allow me to get a custom set made for a type 4 (or a loving wife that would want for me to be happy!) as for the noise -what noise?👍

I know how you feel ancient. I've saved for three years to get this work done.

Craig - Thank for sharing the pics. Very impressive. The 4 into 1 on the buggy is a beautiful setup but I wonder how much vapour lock you get in the carbs with the front exhaust manifolds beneath the intake manifolds. Sure is a pretty piece of kit. Looks like some kind of new age trophy. The baja exhaust looks just like I would expect a baja exhaust to look. No frills and all workhorse.

As the exhaust is plumbed up I'll be sure to post up some pics. It was coming off this afternoon and it didn't want to move. He threaded four head bolts because they had been on for years. The rear one have had oil on them for year and were came out and looked like new. Now I know why I didn't fix those leaks!

Cheers again.

I had cannons on my buggy but now I have a merged 4 into 1. The 4 into 1 is much better in every way in my opinion.

You don't get any vapour lock.

Both the systems photographed cost less than $200 new, the only additional cost was the ceramic coating of the buggy exhaust ($100).

any update photo's?

I didn't take the camera with me today and I'm heading off to Newcastle for the weekend returning Tuesday / Wednesday. It has become a 4 into 2 into 1 system. It is very well designed to the lay person such as myself. I will have to admit the final price will be more than $200 but I'm not to worried. MArk is his name and he definately knows what he is doing. It looks very good and sounds even better. He has taken into account access to the plugs, access to the head covers and clearances for wheels and offroad exit points.

The sound now lacks the "Crack, Crack, Crack" of the previous straight through system but now have a rather deep drone with still quite a bit of volume. It definately sounds nice, shame it dosen't actually have the herbs to match the note it gives. I'm sure any futher engine improvements will make it sound even better, mild cam, changing the intake and even an improved carb set up.

A brief description is that it wraps behind (towards the transaxle) merging both sides into pipes which collect in the centre and wrap around the left of the engine to merge a hand span before the muffler. The exit pipe has been bent 50 degrees down towards the ground and cut horizontally so the actual pipe is just behind the cage crossbar. It will be finished in black heat proof.

The old system proved very difficult to remove had it not been for the value of an angle grinder. It now has extractors and has been tested for leaks and welded and braced. He has created a flange held by two bolts just before the muffler so I can remove it in the future to either work on the engine or replace it altogether with another muffler.

Although I would have prefered to have had it registered by today I'm very pleased they have taken the time to ensure it is done well and sounds good. There is a dyno tune just up around the corner so depending on finances I will have it tested after the card kit has gone in.

Thank guys, I will post pics as soon as.

Got to take it for a spin this afternoon. Wow, heaps of grunt! I was impressed with how it ran before but now it really hammers. It's got a lovely drone at song and has a whining turbo type sound when you give it a squirt. I thought it was going to break traction on a couple of corners. The mechanic followed me over to the Blue slip guy in his V8 commodore (VL) and said he had a hard time keeping up. Pulled away from him at both sets of lights. I didn't know a Baja could actually perform on the road.

Anyhow, I have a seal to replace behind the pulley and the demister on the driver side isn't working because the butterfly vent is jammed. Easy to fix so it should be registered tomorrow if the seal can be found locally.

yeah no seal.

its an oil slinger which flicks the oil back in as it trys to escape.

just clean up your engine really good for inspection and make sure u have a decent breather to vent gas,

But it is almost pouring out. Don't tell be it flogged out. I can't afford to split the engine. We gave it a wash before we went but the oil is so thin it left a few drops on the floor in the 10 mins it took him to try and figure the demister out. Mabey I should replace the oil with a thicker grade. Was so hot by the time we got there it was very thin.

I'll give the mechanic a call and let him know what you guys have posted. He was sure there must have been a seal behind the pulley holding it's guts in.

He he - Maybe if I just drained it - Then it won't leak.

If it's coming out behind the pulley you may have a blocked engine breather, just a thought.

Thanks - When the mechanic gets there an answer the phone I'll tell him to:

* Change the oil to new (thicker) oil.
* Make sure the engine is breathing and the case is not pressurized
* Give it a good water blast and run it again till the oil is hot and see if it still leaks.

Where is the breather located? Arn't there one on each tappet cover or somewhere else. I think I've seen them on tappet covers but not on mine. What about on the top of the engine? I can't remember seeing a breather anywhere.

the stock breather is on the oil filler.

itys behind the filler cap (front is front of car) this line is plumbed from the factory back into the stock oil bath air cleaner

then on the later model engines there should be another pipe which comes from under the oil filler and goes in a bend down thru the tinware and points at the ground, from the factory there is a rubber valve on the end of this to stop crud gettign in but these crack and fall off.

your engine case then has either 1 or 2 pressure releif valves depending on model.

these are at the front and rear of engine but dont ask me how they work.

thicker oil for the inspection is a good idea.

also maybe clean it around the corner from the inspection place with some degreaser and let the engine cool for an hour, read a book, and then putt around to the inspection place with cold oil.

As Anthiron said it's the pipe that comes from beside the oil filler cap but just make sure not only the hose but also the breather type box (that the cap fits onto) is clear. If you have a slight blockage you will get a drip, I once had the hose on the cab completely buckle in half blocking it up completely, not a pretty sight, the oil comes out under pressure hits the back of the pulley then gets evenly distributed around the engine compartment🙁

ur filler def doesnt have a hose on there
and looks like it may even be blocked off
which would be the cause of the problem
probably happend when who ever put the off road air cleaner on

if ur running an off road a/c it makes it difficult but it would probably be easiest to just fit one of those rocker cover breather/filters on it
