quick shifter question (double meaning, hurrah!)

if the gearbox in my beetle crunches already into second gear with the stock shifter (it's done this for as long as i've had the car...new box will be going in with my engine transplant in a few months time) would installing an aftermarket shifter like an empi trigger shifter make the problem worse? i ask because i was given one for my birthday last month and have not installed it because of this.

i don't think it would because the shifter only makes the shifting distance shorter so the only thing making it worse will be slamming it between gears that the new shifter will allow you to do more comfortably 🙂

anytime, hope it works well. i got one of the inserts that works on the stock shifter if that makes sense. i love it, couldn't go back to stock.

the quick shift kit that fits the standard vw gearlever...

The EMPI gear lever assembly that takes the place of the VW gear lever assy...

Both of these shift the leverage , so the shifting is shorter
at the top...
I used these back in the 60 and 70s..
I really liked them...

I believe if the small inexpensive plastic bush just rearwards of the shift lever -- is worn or broken...

using the above shifter units may make shifting worse??
I'm only guessing about this....
if I was to install one of the above I would replace the small bush first.... to stop any problems before they happen... IMHO...
Maybe I'm wrong about the bush... just My thoughts...

On the other hand ...

You could just install the EMPI shifter and see what happens..

I don't think the shifting crunching will get any worse...

don't forget to grease the unit...

Best of Luck

i've driven a few VWs that have had the front bushing missing completley and the extra slop caused by this can sometimes make 2nd gear and reverse bind on downshifting

but u'll know when that happens
its a bloody awfull grind much worse than worn syncros LOL
