I've just spoken to Craig Torrens who, driving his 1916cc Pobjoy-engined 1976 VW Beetle, won his class at the Australian Hillclimb championships at Mount Panorama, Bathurst. It was a close battle, but Craig managed to j-u-s-t keep ahead of a tough Holden Gemini coupe and a Cosworth-powered BDA Escort, once again lowering his under 2-litre improved production car record, too, to 29.57 (tbc). He's pretty happy and I reckon he'll provide a bit more more info later tonite or tomorrow when he gets home.
:thumb for VW power!
edit: The Gemini was also twin-cam 2.0-litre powered

well done !
'Ah, whatever................'
Just spoke to him! He's over the moon. Pulling up Bells at the moment, so no doubt will have all the details later tonight! Well done Craig.
Well done Craig- good to see a Beetle at the front.. but dont bother coming to the Noosa Hillclimb, as you would then be in my class and I can certainly do without getting my ass whipped, well okay.. in some circles..
my Herbie is the only beetle running, up against some Imps, a Humber and a Peugeot. I think there are a few formula vees as well
But back to the point.. well done..

I knew Craig was good, but I'm very impressed. The twin cam cars must be making a lot more power. But how weird is it. The 3 top cars are all over 30 years old. 😏
Imagine how quick he could go if he went on a diet :kiss
Keeping it real !
Craig or his car? Lol... A good start might be less McDonalds for one and some alloy wheels for the other...

Well done Craig ,you are an insperation to us all in racing
Don't let body work get in the way of real suspension travel
Hi
Well done Craig, I tried to call him today to congratulate him but his phone went through to the work switchboard.
Bathurst is a very steep hill climb, maybe it suits 8 valve motors better than 16 valve motors, just look what Wayne Penrose, Gumley & Craig have done with 8 valve motors. btw, how did the Gumley machine go?

Top work Craig, must have been the Nanna nap in the pro race trailer/caravan setup you had on site. Peter Gumley (Formula Libra) was a close 4th behind the Lola of West and the Gould GR55B from the UK (double entered). Top weekend of racing.
