Just found out my brakes are about 68% more rooted than I had previously hoped, and I need a whole set of wheel cylinders 4 for the front, and 2 for the back, as well as drums and shoes all round! damn it.....please help if you have anything either new, good, or a bit crap but restorable.....I could do with old wheel cylinders as long as they just need a honing, and don't have any pitting inside the bores whatsover.

Happy Birthday in advance!!:birthday

Hi Ren,

I am have some front drums, not sure of the roundness but enough meet for a skim and some oversize shoes no doubt. $25 each

I have 2 NOS rear Wheel Cylinders with the larger bore for late model Type 3 wagons. $100 pair. In the box.

I have shoes as well but if yours are OK just get them re bonded, otherwise I have shoes that you can get rebonded. $10 front and another $10 for the rear.

With the front wheel cylinders you cannot get kits for these, but if you buy 2 german 68 onwards beetle rear wheel cylinders you can use the internals from these to rebuild your Type 3 fronts, you just need a good brake shop to do it.

Cheers,

David

Thanks a lot Calcool, very helpful but I'm ok for drums now, those rear wheel cylinders for lates are easy to get still for a lot less than 100 a pair because they are the same as 71-79 super beetle, cip1.com sell them for 11 us each. If yours are 311 stamped then I'm sure they'll be worth a lot to someone NOS, but I'll just go with the super's. I think Vanagon rears are also a straight fit to rear type 3 drums. 80-92, although I think late bays again use the same as vanagon.

Hmmm, interesting info about using internals from super rear to rebuild the fronts. I found a place in brunswick that resleeves so I'll talk to them about it. Don't think I'll get away cheaply though! Might have to bite the NOS bullet and get some from samba.
I have some shoes that I can re bond, just hoping to find some good ones first.
Thanks again calcool, very helpful!

Hi Ren,

It is a while since I was a parts interpreter on Volkswagen, but here goes. No Microfische at hand either

Type 3 rear wheel cylinders are different from those of a late Beetle as type 3 drums and shoes are wider therefore requiring a different offset from the backing plate. So I cannot understand how CP1 say it works, do they suggest you change to late Beetle backing plates, drums and shoes to fit the Wheel cylinders..

Late Bays and early Vanagons use the same wheel cylinders, but yet again these are even wider shoes and drums than the Type 3 therefore yet another different offset from the backing plate.

With regard to the late beetle rear wheel cynders being used to repair the fronts on an early type 3 the type 3 has 2 wheel cylinders per front wheel and each of these has 1 piston each and the bore size is the same at the late Beelte rears so you need 1 late Beetle rear wheel cylinder per side for the front of the type 3. I know this as I have done it myself, honest. Don't think cheap when it comes to brakes it is better to stop than it is to go. Spend less on the go and more on the stop it will cost you less in the long run.

Same goes for shoes get your old ones re bonded so long as they are not worn on the contacts with the wheel cylinders or the adjusters. No probs if you don't buy my wheel cylinders but at least you can be sure they will fit.

Cheers.

yeah I think you have to slot the backing plate or something. The vanagon ones apparently go straight on, according to a couple of Samba members who have done it. Of course I'm a bit sceptical too until I see it actually work, which I haven't.
Shoes will be rebonded for sure, makes more sense than messing with old stuff.

The later rear cylinders like you have are different than pre-august 65 rear wheel cylinders (mines a march model), and I'm pretty sure all squarebacks have larger bore rear wheel cylinders, not sure what effect this would have, since the master etc, are still the same on all body types. Maybe a slightly slower response?

About the bug cyl internals....wouldn't you need one for each cylinder on the front of the type 3? 4 all up. Not sure what you mean by "so you need 1 late beetle rear wheel cylinder per side for the front of the type 3"....do you mean per side of each drums, or per side of the car? I guess you mean 4 all up.

Thanks again, David.

I would be sceptical too on the Vanagon stuff.

The late Type 3 ie 73 Wagon in Australia had larger Bore rear whell cylinders externally they are the same but the bigger bore was supposed to give better pressure not slower. They will bolt straight onto your car though.

With the front drums on your Type 3 you have 2 wheel cylinders on each side but they only have one piston in them each. The late Beetle rear wheel cylinder have one wheel cylinder on each side but each wheel cylider has 2 pistons in it. So you only need 2 Beetle rear wheel cylinders to do your 4 fronts.

Take the drum off the front of your type 3 and it will all become clear.

Cheers and good luck with your stopping.

thanks oliver, I'll check it out tomorrow for sure. Talked to lindon today. He said those cars at wolfy's are all 15yr paddock sitters, so probably rusty wheel cylinders, but we'll see.🙁

thanks adam, but the shoes are already worn out! went today to get some front drums, and front set of wheel cylinders out of the fastback. They are ok, so I'll take them in for re sleeving tomorrow, just need some super bug wheel cylinders for the back now, and maybe rear drums, but I think I'll just get the rear shoes re bonded for the bigger internal diameter of my worn rear drums!:blah
