Hi Deon

There is a pawl that makes the ratcheting sound, it has a 1/2 circle on its end that needs to fit inside the 1/2 circle on on the rod, so lift up the lever as high as it will go, you may need to back off the cables 1st, then have the teeth engage the other toothed part as the pawl fits into the rod. If it has fallen out this is a sure sign that both your brakes and hand brake need adjusting, adjust your brakes 1st, then the handbrake cables.

Hey Deon I can't help but laugh as I remember doing the exact same thing while driving along mindlessly playing with the knob on the handbrake when the thing just sprang apart, my mate in the passenger seat seemed to think it was the funniest thing ever!!😂

Usually it's a pull apart and fiddle for hours to put it back together job. I don't envy you at all.

If its anything like the handbrake on mine be prepared for a few hours of grazed knuckles...cos its a right pain in the arse to fix back together.

Eventually managed to fix the thing...and its all ok now....but..it now has some added parts in the shape of some coathangers bent round the end and also an Ikea spanner propping up from the bodywork to hold it in place...

It works.......its good......

This happened to mine a couple of months back, easy as piss to fix.
First take out a seat to get acess (Easy if you've done it before) and remove the frog (Rubber boot),
Undo one of the cables so that the cross over pivots (The bit the cables join to) out of the way,
Lift the handbrake up as far as it goes, you should see the ratchet arm hanging down (You'll probably see the end with the hole),
Use a small screw-driver or whatever you have available to pivot the arm so that the toothed end is down (Note: It'll probably swing back over if you let go),
As you do this feed the control rod until it sits over the end of the end of the ratchet arm (Do it at the same time so you can get a feel of it and see if it's in place),
If need be pull the whole handbrake lever sideways a slight amount to get the toothed arm onto the main ratchet gear (the circular toothed part),
Once the ratchet arm is sitting on the ratchet gear, dummy test the lever with no cable load just to see if it's working (Don't go all the way up 😉), if not you may need to stretch your spring a little to increase the spring force acting apon the ratchet,
If all seems okay, return it to the unbraked position and re-install your crossover for the cables ensuring you adjust them accordingly.
As someone said above (1303Steve) your barkes probably need adjusting.
The first time I did it I had it back in and working in about 5 or 10 minutes, so you should be right.
If anyone has any conflicts as to the way I've shown please do correct me.
I hope this helps, if you've already fixed it... then so be it!
:P:P Goodnight my fellow Dee Vubbers.
