hi all. wonder if you could lend me some advice..

i drove my kombi yesterday and today there is a medium pool of oil underneath. it seems to have stopped, it maybe came out as soon as i stopped, when the engine was still hot. it is not really under the engine. it just infront of the line of the back wheels. under the transmission. i am assuming it is transmission fluid >? but i really don't know much more..

2 questions if anyone has the time>
it is safe to drive to mechanic? 20km?
how do i check the fluid level of transmission fluid?

cheers

have a whiff of it... what does it smell like? easy to tell the difference betwen engine oil and tranny fluid. 🙂

If it's engine oil, you may have a shot main main oil seal which will require an engine drop.

If it's trans fluid, check that your CV's arent loose at the gearbox (Ive heard of CV bolts working loose) and that your CV rubbers are good, that your bellhousing bolts are all done up tight, and that the gearbox drain plug has not come loose (unlikely but not entirely impossible).

COuld be a shot gearbox oil seal but I would check everything else first... if it is then the engine will need to come out for that too.

If it seems to be a leaking seal at either end then it'd be a good idea to get it seen o ASAP, as the oil in the bellhousing will eventually trash your clutch.

Cheers!

most vw's have a leaky gearbox nose cone, but you should be able to have a look and see where the puddle has come from ie looking for droplets forming.

To check gear oil level, there is an allen key grub screw thing on the RHS of the gearbox about 3/4 the way up the side. Undo this and stick your finger in and see if u can feel some oil, may need to aim your finger down but if you cant feel any then its time to put some in and make a quick dash to the mechanics.

Engine oil is generally black and will smell like your oil filler tube, gear oil can be transparent, red but is generally not dirty looking.
