Have any of the computer gurus on here got the PC game GTi racing? I got it for Christmas and it works fine on my new laptop only there is a yellow bar across the graphics at various parts of the track which makes it impossible to see the road and car and drive properly. Is there a file I need to make it work? I have a new Dell laptop with the dual centrino board and windows XP. What do I need to do. I have a 150hp virtual aircooled turbo beetle and I'm very frustrated!

HELP Please! :cry

First thing I'd do is download the latest Direct X runtime:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a9b6820-bfbb-4799-9908-d418cdeac197&displaylang=en
Download the latest mobo/graphics drivers for your hardware and make sure the game has the latest patch installed! If this doesn't work, you'll have to go researching on the developers' tech support site ... I've found there's ALWAYS someone else that's had the same problem as you, if you're lucky they've already done the hard work for you :thumb

I installed directX 9.0 in the desktop when I installed GTi racing there and had exactly the same problems. I think the desktop is too old and the laptop has a video card with too low a spec on it. I was thinking to get a desktop for the missus in 07 anyway. I guess it will come a bit sooner than expected.

alternatively, is there a cheap upgrade for laptop videocards?

Na too expensive for the laptop upgrade.
If the specs are still decent on the desktop a new graphics card in there will be the cheapest way else new computer is the go.

Post specs on your desktop and the model of your laptop. The game states:

"1. MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Windows 98/ME/2000/XP
P IV/AMD Athlon processor with 1.8 GHz
256 MB RAM
Video card with 64 MB, DX 8.0 compatible (GeForce 3 or ATI Radeon 9200)*
Sound card DX 8.0 compatible
1,2 GB of free space on hard drive
DirectX 9.0c

2. RECOMMENDED SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Windows 98/ME/2000/XP
P IV/AMD Athlon processor with 2.5 GHz
512 MB RAM
Video card with 128 MB, DX 9.0 compatible (GeForce 5700 or ATI Radeon 9600)*
Sound card DX 8.0 compatible
1,2 GB of free space on hard drive
DirectX 9.0c

Please note that video cards that do not support T&L in hardware do not fully meet the games minimum spec and will therefore suffer performance issues. The game requires video card with Pixel Shader 1.1.
The Game was not tested with onboard graphics cards, including laptops.

*The game does not support GeForce 4MX video cards."

I haven't met a newish Dell laptop yet that had less than these minimum specs, however hardware T&L (transform and lighting) and Pixel Shader 1.1 support may be a prob. You may need to increase the amount of memory assigned to the video card in the BIOS, and possibly the amount of RAM if you only have 256. More info on the model and I can help more.

And remember, upgrading isn't a conspiracy to make you spend money, it's just a head to head nerd-off contest between the software and hardware developers for bragging rights.

Cheers,

Mick.

I've got an Inspiron 6400. I'm not smart enough to figure out the specs, but I suspect the computer might be the teansiest bit slow to run it as well.

Can you tell more about adjusting the BIOS?

If your laptop video subsystem is based on the Intel Integrated Media Accelerator 950 Graphics chipset, you will run into trouble when playing games. The 6400 had options for this Intel chipset or:

128MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1300
256MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1400
256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300

Any of these cards should cook along quite well if you have one of them. Check your display properties (right click on your desktop background image and select properties from the list, click the Settings tab at the top and in the Display field it will indicate what graphics chipset you are using)

Anyway, to the BIOS:
Most Dells enter the BIOS by pressing the F2 key at startup. Once in the BIOS, the setting for Shared video memory will probably be in the Integrated Peripherals section. Make sure it is set at the maximum amount it can go to. I don't have a Dell at home at the moment, but I'm at work Tuesday arvo so I'll update with some clearer instructions then if needs be.

Cheers,

Mick.

Your 950 video should be ok for this game. From the web:

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950

Specifications

pipelines: 4 pixel-pipelines
clock: chip: 400 MHz
memory: main memory shared
directX: 9c, Shader Model 2.0
features: Transform and Lighting Hardware Support, HDTV Hardware Motion Compensation

Base spec of your machine should be:

Intel Core Duo T2300 processor, 60GB hard drive, and 512MB DDR2 RAM, up to 128mg of that available to the Intel 950 onboard adaptor, and it's a PCI Express x16 graphics card, so these few tweaks may improve the performance:

First ensure that 128 mg of RAM is set as the shared video memory in the BIOS.

Start your game. Now I haven't played this game, but it will probably be something like this:

From the main menu, select probably 'Options' or 'Setup'. Then look for probably 'Video' or 'Graphics' settings.

Set your 'Resolution' as 1024 by 768 (not a widescreen native res but it will do to start). Some of these next settings may come under an 'Advanced' tab or button:

Turn off 'Anti-Aliasing', it will be listed as that or 'AA' or 'FSAA' with a number/times like 2x or 4x. Set it to 'None' or 'Off'.

The same with 'Anisotropic Filtering' or 'AF' - set it to 'None' or 'Off'.

Any settings like 'Level of Detail' or 'World Detail', basically anything about detail, set to 'Medium'.

Set any 'Reflection Detail' stuff to 'Medium'.

Set any 'Lighting Detail' stuff to 'Medium'.

Set 'Vertical Sync' or VSync' to 'Always Off' or 'Off'.

Set 'Transform and Lighting' or 'T&L' to 'Hardware Support' or 'HW'. Save these settings if 'Save' or 'Accept' or 'Change' type buttons exist.

Trying the game at these settings should establish whether or not you have a chance of actually playing the game. If it runs well, try upping some of the 'Medium' setting to 'High' (one at a time).

Good luck,

Mick.

Yep, the 945Gm is the motherboard controller chipset, the graphics component of this is the Media Accelerator 950.

From Dell on the web:

"The total of local and shared system memory used by this graphics card is up to 128MB. Local on-board memory is 64MB. Up to 64MB of system memory may be allocated to support graphics, depending on system memory size and other factors."
So the graphics sub-system has 64mb of discreet memory, and therefore the shared memory setting in the BIOS sounds like it only goes to 64mb - whatever, just set it to the highest number available!

I'm assuming you're running XP. Here is the link for the latest graphics driver, download and install this:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&releaseid=R135765&SystemID=INSPIRONI6400/E1505&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=8980&devlib=0&typecnt=1&vercnt=3&formatcnt=1&libid=6&fileid=181000

You may require a BIOS update - get someone VERY confident with computers (preferably with a UPS) to do the BIOS flash if required. Your local Dell dealer should do it for you free of charge if you show up there with the downloaded file and your laptop. Here is the link to the latest BIOS flash (very recent, 19/12/2006):

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&releaseid=R143459&SystemID=INSPIRONI6400/E1505&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=10430&devlib=0&typecnt=1&vercnt=6&formatcnt=1&libid=1&fileid=191473

Everything I read tells me that this game should work ok on this laptop, not great, but definitely ok.

u2u me if you want a contact number and I can probably talk you through this on the phone.

Cheers,

Mick.
