Hi all,
Like the post says "Chassis & Engine No's how to tell ?" I don't know how to tell what year is or whether the no's match it's rather important as the price of car I'm looking at is somewhat influenced by these being matchers.
I know this has been posted before but for the life of me I can't find it, if anyone can post a link or let me know I will be most gratefull ,
Cheers , Al .

On VW's made from 1965 onwards, the fist digit indicates the model ie Type 1 (Beetle), 2 (Kombi), 3 (Fasty, notch, square), the second digit indicates the variation within that model line (dunno how it works with beetles and type 3's but with Kombis 1 is panelvan, 2 is a 9 seat Microbus if I recall, 3 is a Kombi etc...), and the 3rd digit denotes the year model (6 indicates 1966 if a splitty, or 1976 if a bay, and a '69 or a '79 bay will have a 9 etc etc...).

The digits after that are the sequential production number.

Engine numbers Im not sure of off the top of my head and it's often not possible to find out if an engine is the oiginal unit anyway. 🙂

Somebody else could give you a bit more on the engine numbers i guess... im too lazy to consult my TOm Wilson bible 😂

Cheers!

What sort of VW is it in and what is the letter at the beginning of the engine number?

If it doesnt have a letter or letters before the number then it is a pre-1962 engine I believe... making it a 1200 or smaller. Bug/KG/Bus engines were all the same around this time I believe.

As I said, it is often near impossible to find out if an engine is the original unit even if it is a later one with letter prefixes, however these will at least give you an idea as to whether the correct period engine is in the car if this is important. The lack of letters of course indicates pre-1962 (from memory), so if the engine is in a 1967 Karmann Ghia then you know something is awry, if it is a 1959 Kombi however there is a good chance it is OG (not taking into account engine swaps and case replacement etc..)

Cheers!

AD indicates a 1600 that has had the crankcase replaced with a new universal dual-relief case at some stage. AD cases are genuine VW parts, however they were sold only as replacement parts, not factory fitted items... so at thevery least the case is not original... 🙂

OK the car is in a first registered 72 (?) 1600, limlted edition with a vin/chassis 112 228 prefix which would seem to be about right (?) now my idiot book arrived yesterday and according to the numbers in there this would put the motor at a mid 70 mid 71 build "sorta" not 71/72 it realy isn't that specific as the first run of the AD series motors appears to have been huge-- and after further reading there were also some specification changes during this run, oil bypass valve/ dogbox oil cooler /single to twin port and a few others I can';t remember of the top of the head, now one of the reasons I'm prepaired to go the extra buck on this car is obviously matching No's and the right stuff in the car---hence my rabid curiosity and a sneaking suspicion that the motor dosen't match the car--quite--and quite frankly at the price --if it don't --I dont wannit--at that price.

Cheers All ,
Al .
