No longer can we go blasting along NT highways at 190kmh in our turbo kombis to answer the age old universal question of "What'll she do?".
As of 1st January 130kmh speed limit applies. This is of course because unlimited speed is to blame for all NT road deaths, the fact that they have never had a points system to take licences off of morons has nothing at all to do with it.
I agree. Speed is not the main problem with the road toll. It's driver competence that really matters. Unless we weed out the idiots, we will not reduce the road toll.
I'm reminded of my earlier thread about making a meaningful advanced driving course a compulsory part of getting or keeping a licence.
yep....will have to save the track for VWRX now....

The road rules haven't changed.
The speed limit (or lack of) has.
Most people seem normal, till you get to know them.
I have not yet seen anything that says how many accidents & or deaths resulted from travelling over 13okmh on the Sturt highway?
Please, I need drivers side window regulator (winder mechanism) for my '54
First day of these so called new rules and there was one accident/death down on the Lasseters H/way which has been 110km/h for a few years now. So it doesn't make a difference how slow you make people go there will always be accidents. Its a pain for driving down to Adelaide from Alice adds a few more hours at that speed. Is just to make money out of fines.

When I was travelling around there the open speed limit wasn't a factor. Wandering livestock, roadkill & thrillseeking tourists on overloaded 250cc trailbikes were the biggest problem. I found most people/drivers drove sensibly and to the prevailing conditions.
Also consider that a lot of auto companies ship their beasts to the territory for UV exposure testing and high speed runs. Would Bentley or GM's corvette division bother now?
Just revenue raising, plain and simple. No valid excuse to drop the open limit IMHO.

yep, when we were touring NT in the Kombi, we could only travel at 80kmh due to a coupla dying exhaust valves.
& that meant everything overtook us except lizards, we expected to see people travelling at crazy speeds etc.
But, we saw nobody doing anything stupid, or unsafe, we saw no accidents, or near misses, everybody seemed to be driving within their & their vehicles capabilities - I did see a couple of obvious prototypes on test. I think that yes NT will make a bit of money out of it, but will lose a lot of income generally from companies & people going there to test vehicles.
Although having said all that, the actual fine is a pittance compared to other states, & if you can afford a 250kmh car, & the petrol cost to drive to NT, then you can afford the risk of getting caught

It is a sad thing I hate seeing anyone get killed and I worked with the guy whose wife was killed so even more so real. But the fact is that you drive your car the way it wants to be driven in those conditions. Common sense really. Most accidents are simply that, accidents only a few would really be from recklessness. That being the case I doubt that those few people that are reckless are going to give a damn anyway and exceed the limit reguardless. I do hope though in some way these new limits may help but I really doubt it.

both times I went out there, once in the turbo kombi, and once in the holden nova, I went flat out for 10 minutes in each, just to see how fast I could go, but then backed off to 120 in the kombi and around 130 in the nova. Otherwise the noise was just too much the petrol gauge moved too fast and in the case of the kombi, it also ran a bit hot. The only time I got blasted in an overtaking move was a couple of guys on motorbikes. Didnt see them coming from behind and I didnt see them for long when they were in front. Other than that, I agree people were very level headed.
For the record a kombi that could do 14 second quarters is only about 20kmh faster at top speed than a regular 1.6 litre shopping trolley. :cry
that'd have to do with aerodynamics too though.
shopping trolley is light smooth and sleek.
kombi is big heavy brick.:o
BTW, loved the kombi. did the TLE manifolds you gave me come off that?
errrrm if they were painted light grey, and have 1/8 bsp plugs in the end castings, then they are the fast ones. Not sure if I ever had any others.
Yeah I have seen proof that aerodynamics work exponentially. Thing would hall ass from 100 to about 140 and things would start to get tough from there. The vertical frontal area of a kombi would have to be 6, 7 8 times more than a nova.... though the nova was pretty screwed up aerodynamically thanks to a Broken Hill emu at 100kmh.
But we digress, bastards for taking away the only legal real world dyno in Australia. :cussing. Could have been worse I guess, could have set it at a blanket 100 which is what the same undivided road would be if in NSW.
So much for the NT performace check. All good things must come to an end, bloody pollies.

what's with the plugs in em. Didn't the injectors go in there?
