check out the keys on ebay....

You will have to study them to make sure they are the same as yours...

they didn't have any like mine....

I have all My numbers of My locks...

Mick Motors also sells blanks....

Yes the numbers are on the locks...

the previous owner had stamped the number on each key
...
I bought a used engine lid lock with key, not sure the number is on it...
but it was on the door locks....

and I have the ignition key number so I'm presuming its also stamped on it....

Its a wonder someone hasn't come up on here selling keys and cutting them....
I have been told that if You find some blank keys, many key cutters won't do them, or won't guarantee them...

I have thought of asking every shop that cuts keys if they have any VW ones....
as You never know, and the older the shop, the better the odds are....

there was a fellow selling just the keys at a VW show a few years ago, He sounded like He knew what He was talking about and sold Me a key blank for a 1968, but its not the same as any of mine...
and I don't know what happened to it...

Maybe most VW shops sell the key blanks but don't advertise the fact...
Mick motors does advertise He sells the blanks....

Problem being, if you make millions of beetles, then You must make millions of different keys....

Got my key cut at the engraver fella at the shoping centre at Charlestown, he had the blanks and lots of em, still maybe I was lucky.

what model are we talking about cos i know all 12 volt beetles have the code stamped on to everything
its on each door handle, the ignition barrel and the decklid latch if a locking one is fitted but whether the barrels match anymore is another question all together

most of my bugs have always had a seprate key for everything
all i do is rekey the doors and decklid to match the igniton barrel
just a matter of refitting the pins in the tumbler to the right sequence
very slow and frustrating but it works

Hi joel,

Yes, I've seen the numbers only the door handles...
I have a few spares....
I didn't know that You could make them all fit the same key...
as My door handles are probably not the originals...
I have different looking keys and different codes...

I'll have to check My spare door handles etc...
Maybe the locking engine lid has a number on it, I just don't remember....
I have a few of those too....

Maybe I could practice on the spare door handles etc.....

as with one of My door handles , the key has to be pulled out slightly, its not a VW key either..

Can fiddling with the barrels etc fix that up????

Hi Lee,

the code is stamped on the decklid locks aswell
its a real PITA job but if u cant do it urself, easiest way to fix it is pull out the igniton barrel and get the code off it then take the door handles to a locksmith and they'll change it for u

if u have some old handles try taking the tumbler pins out and rearranging them to suit ur ignition key
thats what i did with the decklid lock on my superbug
if one pin is into far swap it with one thats not in far enough

there is a crude method of just filing down the pins to suit what ever key but more often than not more than a few different keys will work after doing that
i could unlock my ex;s 92 corrolla with my 74 celicas key after doing it that way and a mates 79 crown key got it unlocked too LOL
