Question for the gurus,
my box seems to be playing up as of late. At first I had the usual Type 3 occassional crunch into third gear, but that wasn't very frequent or loud. As of late though I have found that from a stop into 1st is crunching (unless I go to 2nd then into 1st). As of this morning I am finding it hard to get into 1st at all from a stop and sometimes when downshifting as well.
Whats the guesses? adjust clutch cable? box dieing etc?
please help me... I can't afford to get the oval running yet so the square is my daily......
Cheers

I dont think 1st is synchromeshed so I by rights downshifting into it at any speed above 10k's should be a bit of an effort anyway...

however if all the gears seem to be getting a bit crunchy at a stanbdstill... particularly 1st and 2nd, then the clutch cable is out of adjustment and needs tightening up... BUT...

In saying that I';d recommend replacing the cable, as if its slackened in a very short space of time it has started to stretch... which means it could be about to give way some time not too far down the track...

I just replaced my Kombis one yesterday cos the (used) spare I put in on the side 0f the road last week (after the old one snapped) started stretching... had to adjust the cable three times through the course of a day as the gears kept going crunchy, which prompted me to get a brand new one.

a new one shouldnt be more than about 30 bucks.... 😎

The 3rd gear crunch is pretty normal on any VW... the 3rd gear synchro ring gets a hammering over the course of 30 years so it wears out faster... 🙂

Yes, there is sync on 1st gear.

Simple answer: Your clutch is out of adjustment and not com, pletely disengaing the engien from the gearbox, which mean steh gearbox is still 'spinning' when you are trying to change gear

Mor complex answer: As detailed above, it sounds like your clutch cable or clutch pedal 'hook' is about to go bang; VWs often exhibit these hard-changing symptoms just before they 'let go'

Ta to both you two and to Brad (CORC) is just around the suburb from my folks place where I am at the moment.
After a bit of swearing, a few minor burns (the car was only just parked and I need to drive again fairly soon) I tightenend the cable and voila!! no crunching at all in any of the gears 😀

Now comes the additional part of my question, I will try Micks on Monday to see if they carry a new cable so i can fit one before this one dies on me. So I am going to try and change the name of this thread, to get the answer to the new question.......

do Type 3 squarebacks use a different length clutch cable from Type 1's??

I'm 99 percent sure - no. They are the same length. I think!

But keep in mind it may be your clutch cable hook that is about to go snap

Spoke to one or two people and they think the type 3 square needs a cable longer then a type 1, so my spare type 1 (read leftover from Oval work) one won't do.
Looks like I need to get a new one come Monday.
And I hope it isn't the gear box lever going, that would just be utter utter crap, especially if it was in trafffic!!!

Just had similar symptoms on the splitty... took the enigne out and examined clutch... turns out if you pressed the centre of the pressure plate it was pretty old and rusted up, and therefore not springing back like it should do, just getting stuck there

New clutch = no problems
