I bought a couple of gauges from urban myth (they look excellent, thanks mate!) that were 3 and a 1/2 inch, having 'measured' the old gauges as that ...well, roughly - sighted across the old gauge with a ruler behind it:

"Yeah that looks about 3 and a 1/2 inches"

Turns out my old ones were actually 3 and 3/8ths.

Now looking forward to removing the steering wheel, boss, levers and column key housing AGAIN to file out that extra 1/8th.

Lesson learned the hard way (is there any other way?). :P

Anyone else got similar stories, so as I don't feel such a lonely drongo?

I learnt to measure everything when back from the machine shop....

resized rods came back with zero clearance to the crank, plastiguage was my friend.

I have cut numerous bits of timber 100mm short in my time too

oh, Mick, I got the pc going, I sent you a u2u but not sure if you got it. Still up for a look see at your steering

....far too many similar stories to list here. My main issue at present is figuring out whether something's metric or imperial - e.g is it 16mm or 5/8 (which is really 15.875 mm according to my conversion charts) - and typically getting it wrong.

Anyone have any hints in figuring that out ?

I used to have a large poster sized wallchart with all the wire gauges, steel, all measurements from 1mm-60mm in all incriments inc af, unc, unf, npt and whitworth. Was bloody awesome. Esp when working with my dad who wants a 1284mm of 3/8 rod with a whitworth (coarse) thread on each end!

Better than drilling a 3 1/2 inch hole when you needed a 3 3/8 one!

No mate, didn't get the u2u. Try again though, because I'd really like to get it looked at before Dubs to the Pub. If you have the time with the new bub and all.

Cheers,

Mick.

Isn't there an old builder's saying - "Measure TWICE, cut once!"
