Hi,

On a recent holiday to you guys I managed to purchase a 56 bus which is now being restored by my good lady's father.

We plan to move to Victoria for good in several months and I plan to bring my 65 samba with me too but I understand there may be one or two regulations I need to know about...if you can advise would be appreciated.

Regarding seatbelts - can lap belts be fitted or do they have to be a 3 point harness on classic vehicles?

Do seatbelts have to be fiited to the rear of the vehicle too?

If you know of any other laws I should be made aware of would be appreciated.

One more thing, who is a good supplier of V-Dub panels and parts.

Cheers all and see you in a few months all being well 🙂

you will need a roadworthy certificate from a authorised inspection workshop
rear belts shouldn't be neccessary
i'd try to get away with the lap belts first(depends on the individual doing the inspection)
where are you from ?
are they l/h/d?(shouldn't be an issue, cause they're over 30 years old)

cheers

Mate

If you're coming from the UK I'd fill it full of parts... who are good suppliers? Well, try schofield, vw heritage etc etc! Thats where a lot of the aussie parts come from (except you'll get bent over a table for them).

About half of my splitty money is spent on the actual parts, the other half spent on shipping them from other continents 😉

look at www.thebusstop.com.au for an idea of what gets imported (and the prices)

Sam

p.s. if your '65 bus is pretty schmicko i wouldnt worry about getting out over the pits, just deal with it when you get over here

Cheers chaps.

Yes I will dig some piccies for you guys and post them up.

The Samba is a left hand drive that was originally imported from California. The bus looked in good nick for the year until I started poking it a screwdriver. The rust I found was bodged in with filler and strips of metal welded overto hide the multitude of sins. Hence, I have replaced loads of panels and the bus is solid on all four corners, front, top, bottom and sides.

The 56 we found had stood since 78 and only needs a floor pan and front floor pan. Remarkable.

Anyroad, I'' get some piccies up.

Maybe there could be an opportunity to obtain you guys some parts over here and pop them in the container I send over with the rest of my stuff. May save a quid or two!

Have a look here. http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Cars/VehicleStandards/default.htm
I haven't read the above, but I believe for vehicles that didn't come with seat belts originally, there is no requirement to have them fitted. I don't know how that impacts on imported vehicles, but the above should tell you.
Look forward to cruising with you Ragerty.
