I've got a 1600 tp in a "61 beetle & she has no air deflectors under the barrels. I'm after the T3 style for a bit of extra cooling as the doghouse setup runs hot in an early girl like mine. Absolutely, Definitely, not chrome.

I'm in Port Macquarie NSW, but they shouldn't be too hard to post (they're actually heaps smaller than they look in the pic).

Matt,
I've got a set, so sent U2U. Anecdotal evidence says don't run these but get some Type 1 deflectors for a Type 1 donk.

ctefeh,

U2U hasn't worked.

More info on anecdotal evidence please, I like to research as much as possible, first recommendation I came across for these was on the Gene Berg site & haven't seen anything against them since, it's good to get as wide a variety of opinions as I can.

Thanks,

Matt.

Matt,
Not sure if my next U2U made it so I will try and find the discussions. It's been a while (year +) and will take some digging.

If the engine is kept oil free this type should work better than the smaller earlier type Matt. These direct the air better over the bottoms of the cylinders. However, if the cyls get oily from oil cooler leaks etc, the dust fills the fins up quite quickly thus reducing the airflow and causes overheating.

ctefeh,

Thanks for those links, in one of them there were some comments from Jake Raby, who had actually done the experiment with different tins on the dyno.

I'ts always good to find info that's not based on assumptions and/or hearsay.

I think I'll get me some stock under barrell tin.

Just a note to complete your inquiry....
You say you are running a "1600 tp in a 61 beetle".... There's a bit of a problem there.....

The offset cooller is by far the best option for oil cooling your engine, but I have found that the later cooling systems (even the none offset ones) are so good at sucking in air into the shrouding, that in its mission to keep the engine temps down, it is not leaving sufficient air in the engine bay for the air intake to do its job.... This is why the factory added more intake vents in the engine cover to compensate.... This is why you see a lot of cars running cabrio engine covers..... But I can't afford one of those and I haven't found a louver that looks like the OG cabrio ones to graft in, so I run hood stand-offs during summer to keep the temps down.... Engine temps don't seem to be an issue during winter.....
FUCH your early!
