with enough ballast and suspension modifications (to hold the ballast weight), with really low tire PSI a 1600 beetle could pull a 747. it was just a big PR stunt by VW via fifth gear.

although yes i admit, the v10 diesel in the touareg is mighty impressive, its not really the reason it pulled the plane.

I'd like to see that. Even if it had the power it would want to have a serious clutch.

its not power thats in question its traction, another forum im a member of, inside their automotive sub-forum there was a 2000 reply thread about this same news a few months ago. (this is from last year i believe)

there was a huge argument over how it was done, some people claimed it was the huge power and torque of the touareg.

well, controversy reined, because before this was aired on fifth gear the media picked up on it and alot of them claimed "no modifications were made to the car, apart from the custom tow rig".

which is untrue, the suspension was heavily modified, because of the huge amount of ballast (795 lbs IIRC), and the tires were running super high pressures.

others on the forum claimed it was simply the ballast that allowed it to pull it, simply because all you need is traction to pull something of this weight (155 tons IIRC).

I studied aeronautical surface movement for 6 years, traction is the first element.. therefore weight, and tyre size/pressure. The towies on the tarmac only run 100hp engines but weigh something like 15 tonnes because of heavy earth-weights. Not to mention the highly geared boxes they have running.

My mate crazy dave took his torago, dumped 2 tonne of blue metal in the car and towed a 747 at Kingsford Smith about 7 years ago, as one of the towies didn't turn up for work, his kids were still in the car waiting to be dropped off at school.

Like frenzix said, gear ratios and traction. How much power and torque does a plane tractor make? I bet it's way less than the toureg. 😉

i'm sure we've all seen lesser cars pop trying to tow coolrooms/caravans/etc.... i'm impressed by the sheer strength of the car... not the technical pish and nonsense 😉
