As I now live on a main road I have to say I am totally surprised and appalled by the number of police cars going past at well over 100kmh in a 70 km area.

Last week a couple of ambulances went screaming down the road. Then a couple of cop cars... but for the next 20 minutes cars were screaming down the road with V8's on fire. There would have been at least 8-10 of them. Later found out that a young girl was hit at a nearby crossing.

Obviously ambos need to get there as quick as possible, every second counts. 2 or 3 cop cars might need to get there quick to interview driver, block traffic. But the rest of them had no business putting other lives at risk by screaming down the road. When the accident is 2km from the police station it isnt going to make a lot of difference whether they travel at 60 70 80 or 120kmh. Its just downright stupid and dangerous.

Also the other day I was overtaken in a 70k zone by a cop car and paddy wagon without lights or siren. I sped up to 85 and it was still pulling away. I'm happy to play by the rules and live with penalties if the rules apply to all.

This plus the lack of action from police the several times I have called them has me thinking I may get a little bit political. I want to get a scanner so I can listen in. Who's got one, what do I need to know in order to make a wise purchase?

Many police radios are now digital and are not receiveable on normal scanners....
depends where you live, and what system they have...
some areas are still using analogue systems which you can listen too...

Maybe there are some scanner listeners on here...

I used to listen to the police a few years ago but not a lot happens up here...

The ambulances are strictly controlled with their speed and sirens etc...
[My Wife is a nurse and does spend some time in them occasionally...]

naturally the police are not...
I was overtaken by 3 police cars last week out on the highway, one was unmarked with blue flashing lights on the dash... they all had their sirens and lights flashing,
they all went round Me and accelerated very fast... When i came to the next small town, there were also two police cars from the opposite [town] direction... outside a house....??

also the fire Brigades seem to be in a similar situation to the police, any sirens, any time, any speed...
One of the local SES people told Me He leaves His siren on all the time when going somewhere...
Ambulances are not supposed to ....

If You have watched any of the POLICE shows from the USA on Foxtel etc...
You will note that it can take 20 police cars to catch one car.../ person....
it must be the way things are done....

the more police the better ....!!

amazeer...I think that most areas down this way are all still on analog so your regular scanner should do the trick. Im assuming you are still in Wollongong area.

Just having come from a meeting with senior QLD police to address a number of police action issues I can say with experience that to complain is to seek wrath of the thin blue line down apon you. Right, wrong or otherwise.

This was all within my professional capacity.

Personally I attended mediation once to address a bad attitude cop, the cop attended with 3 bad attitude mates and gazzumped the mediator; turned into a bloodbath.

Who polices the police? No-one for the most part.

That being said, rapid response to emergencies is necessary and saves lives.

so your getting your knickers in a knot because the force in question are simply doing their job ? and because of this you want to get a scanner to listen to police chatter to make sure they are doing their job ?

tell me, what will you do when you hear something on a cop radio frequency that makes you think they're using their powers wrongly. call the local station and tell them you've been listening to their channels (illegal in some states i think), and you think one of their officers is misbehaving ?

personally i reckon coppers do a great job, and id rather leave them be and let them maintain the amazing environment we have in australia. then try to disrupt them simply because of a few incidents you've witnessed.

you need a digital scanner which if you have a spare $800 to $900 from dick smiths you will be ok to listen, some people are playing them over the net ,if you want to google "online police scanners" i know you can listen to a sydney one at the moment, but you get whatever comes up not any particular area command😉:thumb

Mate, dont waste your money. Most of the jobs are picked up now on mobile data terminals, so the only things being broadcast are urgent immediate jobs and chatter. The new digital radio system being rolled out is not accessible to anyone with less than $5k to spend. And with the introduction of the new CAD (computer aided despatch) system in July, it will be like listening to paint dry.

I CAN tell you from experience (37 years of it) that yes there are some yahoos out there who need a good kick up the arse. But the supervisors and duty officers KNOW where their people are at any time of the day and know when someone has to drive too fast to get where they need to be.

Its unfortunate but after all, they do recruit from the wider community and I venture that there are more hoons on this forum than in the 15000 police out there. My advice is that if you got a problem, write the number of the car down, time date and other relevant details, and write a complaint. It might not get the job done if the offender is a once off. But if he starts getting one after the other, then the duty officers get very pissed off cleaning up trivial complaints all the time. There is one or two I work with now been grounded and spend all of their time talking to drunks in the charge room for 12 hours at a time. Not happy.

hmm yeah. I did complain a few years back when I had one smoke up the tyres summernats style when doing a u turn, lost control, mounted the median strip and came straight towards me. All I copped that day was a mouthfull from the guy behind the desk... though I probably gave him some considering what just happened.

I'm no cop basher, I know they are ordinary people doing a tough job... but when they have the uniform on they have to follow the rules very closely. Sometimes it is necessary to drive fast, so long as other people arent put at risk. The day the girl was hit was totally ridiculous. Unfortunately I think there are far too many in the lake illawarra command that dont mind the sound of a V8 at wide open throttle.

I have listened to a scanner for years. Not any more but it was a part of my job description many years ago in another life.

Anyhow, it is not illegal to listen to a police scanner but it is illegal to act on or record (retain) information said on a police frequency. So if your listening to your scanner driving to the service station to get bread and milk and across the radio comes the fact there is a seven car pile up a block away and deviate from your intended route to the service station, congratulation you have just committed an offence. However I have never heard of someone being charged.

Alternately if you are traveling to the same said service station and you hear that there is an accident 1 block ahead and you deviate to avoid the accident because you are now aware of it, congratulation you have also committed an offense.

To concur with what hutch has said. Note the time, place and vehicle and direction and address your complaint to the inspector of highway patrol or general duties and rest assured action will be taken if it has been witnessed and the officer did not have due reason to be traveling at that time. I was walking back from the University of Newcastle one day along the roadside along a long stretch of road heading to Wallsend. A police vehicle blew past me at over 140km/h in a 60 zone. The vacuum from behind the car actually knocked me over and onto the road. I wrote a letter of complaint to the inspector at Wallsend Station and received an apology within the week. Of if the officer was in the wrong or not I do not know but his letter was sincere and appreciated.

My two cents worth is that the police have a very tough job and like in any industry you are going to get your power trippers and yahoos. More than one the local police where i have grown up challenged me to shooting cats at the dump because I was in the military at the time. Their are plenty of check and balances to avoid Larrakin behavior.

If a scanner is all you want then save your money and listen to it online. Yes it is interesting but as i now have kids I don't like it running unless they are well and truly asleep. Having worked night for more year thanI care to remember I choose to enjoy my ignorance of just what exactly our blue wedge puts up with when we are sleeping comfortably.

Look up the road laws... Police/Emergency vehicles have their own sets of laws, so they don't have to follow the same road rules that the general population does. Whether they have their lights/sirens on or not is irrelevant in certain situations... ie. if their lights are off, it doesn't automatically mean that they have to abide by civilian laws.

Some still break their 'special laws'... but don't make it your problem unless it has directly affected you!

I only have one thing to complain about with the Police (and sometimes the Ambos) is that they don't have their sirens on enough.. they can be tearing through the middle of town with just thier lights flashing.. i can't count the number of times i haven't realised a cop was there until they've already zoomed past me!
