Having never owned one, what are the differences, if any, between a semi-auto and manual beetle? Besides the obvious transmission difference, are there changes in the pan or body that would make it hard to put a semi auto body on a manual pan?
In the semi auto you dont have a clutch or clutch tube fitted to the chassis
Yes you can put the semi auto body onto the manual pan no probs
Proud_Dad,
Semi-auto's are all IRS too. There are extra holes in the body and an extra bracket (all round the engine compartment) but nothing that will affect a swap.
Not sure whether it applies to Aus delivered bugs, but the later the pan, the better chance it may have the clutch tube already in there. In the US at least they seem to be on 71 ish and later pans. Check it anyway.

There are a couple of extra holes for trans fluid reservoir etc (auto) and Z-bar suspension assist bar (man) that you may have to think about, too

Pay your debts, CxxT
all semi autos after 70 or 71 have the clutch cable conduit fitted
im not sure if all semi autos were imported but 1500s defiantley were and ive heard before not sure if its true tho that they were dipped in some sort of rust proofer that the aus assembled bugs wernt
there are alot of solid semi autos out there but ive also seen some pretty tradgic ones too but mainly S and Lbugs tho

yeah ALL semi autos were built in germany, and seems to be more resiliant to rust compared to their aussie buddies.
my semi-auto has SFA rust and the reason its there is because some twit put the window rubber in upside down.
