What kind of hitches are availiable for a beetle so that I can tow a caravan, I've looked for things and all I can find is ones that turn the car into the trailer... any help?
How heavy is the caravan? I dont reckon you will be able to legally tow a caravan even if you wanted to. Check with your state authorities first.

I dont think you want to tow a real caravan with a beetle.
The towbars (if you can find one) are not rated thet heavy, brakes and cooling would suffer.
Maybe one of those doggie trailers but I doubt it.

Plenty of Bugs towed small vans of 2 or 3 berth size in the later 60s. As long as the van weight (loaded) is less than the towing vehicle it is Ok. The small Jayco and similar pop up types would be great on any Bug with a 1500 or more motor. Just make sure the bumper mounts are rust free!

It's not a large caravan at all, it's Teardrop caravan they are roughly 250kg

so what options are out there, how would I go about mounting a towball etc..?
it's a '67 1300 Deluxe
Have a look at the link below. The early Bug bar is missing a piece which went inside the bumper.

A candy coloured clown they called the sandman tip toes through my room every night just to sprinkle stardust on my pillow go to sleep everything will be allright

1968 single cab kombi
The tow bars that connect to the rear bumper only are not strong. Make sure that what you get is connected to the bumper and the rear torsion bar tubes.
thats the one i have its massive

I used to tow a small boat (Tinny) behind my beetle and it towed it no problems. But I wouldn't recommend anything heavier than that.
I had a tow bar that mounted on the bumper brackets only. Someone told me it was illegal as the tow bar must be attached to the floor pan, not the shell.

i used to tow a few things with mine
my tow bar doesnt fit atm cos of my stupid fart boy exhaust but with my 1600 pulled my old boat no probs and my 1835 pulled an empty car trailer fine
just make sure its a solid mounted towbar not one of those shitters that just bolts to the bumper brackets

I'm hoping to tow a small dog trailer with my beetle so I'd be interested to hear how you go 👍 Good Luck 🙂
1974 L-bug... 'Basil'
VW's were made to be driven, not hidden.
my empty car trailer was 410kgs I towed with my towbar I quickly made at work one day mounted to guards only. I then put a 3.6 x 2.4 cedar cubby house on it. Pulled it no problems at all. Didnt stop too well though! Mind you, it stopped and steered better that day than the day I filled up with a dozen bags of cement.
I'm up in Qld and I have one sitting in my garage that bolts to the torsion bar tubes and into the bumper, where are you?
Cruelty to animals is illegal, immoral and just downright wrong.
