Hey kids, was called into a meeting today at work and the boss needs six of us to go to Christchurch Middle Earth, to train the kiwis on how to dissasemble and assemble the new Pratt and Whitney V2500 Gas turbine turbo fan(jet engine) used on the new Airbuses(i think). It is a six month contract with 12 weeks on 1 week holiday not taken from my normal 4 weeks annual leave and then back for another 12 weeks. We get put in a motel with our own rooms no sharing $25 a day meal allowance, $50 a day living expense, free car hire plus my normal weekly wage and a wage increase when i come back after six months. Now i know most of you guys would say go for it, which is what i want to do BUT it means i won't be able to finish my 66 beetle project and won't have it ready for the warwick drags which i have had my heart set on since drag day last year. If i go for it, i will be selling my 04 golf GTI, my 72 notch, but not my bug. I am selling the golf cause i obviously won't be needing it. It's come as quite a mind bender for me as i will be not seeing my beautiful girl Rackie aka Fern butter bug and will miss my son Seth like crazy who i only get to see two weekends a month anyway, cause he lives with his crazy mother. Although i will probably fly back once a month to see him and Rackie. So the cards have been delt, what do you guys reckon?
This is my Volkswagen, there are many like it, but this one is mine. Without me my Volkswagen is useless, without my Volkswagen, I am useless.

dude, seriously tough call. On one hand you have your passion and your family, on the other you have cash and a potentially once in a lifetime opportunity. Think about it long and hard and if you still cant decide then toss a coin. Has never failed for me

I don't envy you Damo - its one of those decisions that whichever way you go, you will second guess yourself and think "what if?"

Only you can decide which are your higher priorities....at the end of the day as much as I'd love to see your bug stompin at warwick in '07, there will always be next year!

After all I tried to have my ragtop finished for valla.....didn't get it finished till the following valla! So I guess you have to weigh up if the trip will open new doors to you in your current employer, or others. By the sound of what you mentioned to me yesterday, I'd have a look at what is available job wise, that way you'll really know all your options.

Good luck mate.

HHHHHmmmmmmmmmmmm tough one.
Put the beetle in the shed next to the chassis. Sell the rest. Hook up with Rackie & son on the internet everynight. That one week back will be memorable😎
Take the cash. Give the kiwis heaps when they lose the world cup.👍 Hunt out hazet/factory tools for me😵👍 and see the sights/ski/snuggle sheep.
When its over you will be more enthusastic, cashed up & have a much more experienced resume/career.
But in the end it will always be head vs heart. Good luck Champ.

No one on their death bed ever says I wish I had more money, a better car or bigger house.
At that point when things get into clear perspective, relationships and time with your family really matter.

You are being asked to give up a great deal for only $13000, and thats if you did not spend a cent while you are there. Many people find they blow quite a bit of their allowances on getting into trouble while bored and away from family and friends (and VWs to work on).

Your dubs always going to be there, is your boy and fern going to be there aswell? the job option is probably a take it or leave it now or never. theres always next year for the drags, how important is it anyway? if it was me, id be asking the affected people, mostly your son what they think, but thats just me, dont shoot me saying the vw isnt terribly important, in the big picture it doesnt seem much of a factor thats all. Value the opinions of Rackie and seth, they should be the biggest factor since it affects them aswell.

Do what's right for you and your family first.
At the end of the day it's a car, Warwick will be there the following year etc etc
At worst it's only six months which will be gone before you know it...
All the best
Cheers

Go for it dude.. I got offered Melbourne and the UK for work and now regret not doing it... well, London, anyway. :P

As for the car, who cares - my latest resto was supposed to be 12 months, now it's nine years and still going because I always say 'yes' to the 'Londons' when they are offered to me...

Do it if you like the job.

You will be better for it and you will get more experience.

Maybe ask for a trip back once a fortnight.

yeah for me all that 'away' time for only that much $$.. no thanks..
really.. for skilled positions these days your boss should be offering a hell of a better deal than that.. for example 2 weeks on, 1 week off, fly in/fly out (hell ts a business expense so wont cost them a cracker) or such; as so you can still have a family at the end of your time doing the right thing for the company..
basically in the end work comes n goes but your family and health are more important so need to be valued as such..
maybe, get your work mates together and let the boss know how you all think?
im sure all your workmates have similar situations..
plus if you come back more often than every 3 months the ride will be racing @ warwick..
goodluck with it..
keep us posted..

tough one with the loved oens, but no reason to sell the dubs, just store and imagine all the extra cash you will have saved (plus the age increase) that you will be able to spend on the drag bug when you return.

who do you want to spend your time with?

1. your woman and your son
2. strange kiwis

I know what I'd choose. $13k doesn't buy that much HotVW.

Think about that paul kelly song, "to her door"

"could he get a picture, would he know his children?"

I'm with dave777. A lot can happen in 6 months.

Lots of excellent replies people i value your comments, we will see how the next week goes in confirmation on this job posting, me head says go for it me heart says hang out with the family. To be honest i wanna go, never been overseas, always wanted to though and i never went overseas when i finished my cooking apprenticeship. I will be getting the chance to come back whenever i want to, i was planning once a month and NZ is only 3 or 4 hours away, Hell if i do it i might get the oppurtunity to be working in the US or Germany and take the family with me.:P And as for only getting $13000, i believe it will be much more than that, not many qualified gas turbine overhaul and maintanence engineers in Oz, and i will be paid in Aussie dollars. So we will see how things go. Cheers Damo.

Go for it man. I lived in Christchurch for 2 years and the South Island is a bewtiful place. Especially in Autumn. Fly ya GF out for a couple of weekends. Queenstown is only 4hrs of so by car
There is a really active VW scene in Christchurch too.
