I neeed to know what i can do about my Auto gearbox to reduce the revs.

Fozee the quickest and easiest way and probably the cheapest is to get some bigger diameter rubber under there...17's maybe?:thumb

mate the bus looks real clean, you cut the rust out i see too,

has turned out great, clean straight and bulls**t fast hehe,

about your revs,
i got that prob too n want to lower them when on the freeway. Im just guna do it properly n have my ratios in gearbox changed. I will keep 2nd gear, 1st will be strenthened for burnouts, 3rd n 4th will be much taller for top speed. The final drive ratio in an 091 (manual box tho, but same idea is there) is .88 i think (or close enuff) and albins make up to .55 which will make your car rev as much at 140km/h as it does at 100km/h now,

long live the v8 kombi

submit a video mate, im submitting mine 2day too

Is there another VW gearbox with a 4 speed Auto i can replace my T2 auto with??
ring and pinion out of another kombi box? maybe the ring and pinion out of a type 3 auto, I remember someone saying the gearboxes were the same except for ratios. I don't know about these for sure.

I'm running 235/85-16 Pirelli Scorpion All-Terrains, which people say makes my bus look like a drag car. Mine is running with the rear suspension sitting at stock height, which lifted the bus by about 90mm. There is room to lower it though.

They've dropped the revs at 100kmh from around 3900 to about 2950.

Hypothetically, something around 235/60-20 would be almost the same height, if the 'fat' tyre look doesn't suit. (Yes, that's 20" rims!) Unfortunately, I haven't managed to find even a 20" tyre with a suitably tall profile to give me the same O.D. as the tires I'm currently running, but that's not to say that they're not out there.

It's important to note, that these will not fit on the front; you would have to run a different size to keep your speedo accurate. The rear brakes should also be upgraded to compensate for the larger diameter.

Like I said, that is without modifying the rear ride height. I'm guessing you could either drop it down at least 90mm, or of course, lift it right up. Honestly, mine sits high enough now to go nearly anywhere, but the wheels still tuck up nicely under the rear guards, giving it a good 'street' look. 😀

So Kol that apparent higher gearing would be good for a V8 but does your VW engine handle it OK or are you into 3rd at the whiff of a hill? :cussing

Got some new tyres today definate rpm difference for given speeds.

3450 RPM @ 100kph with R14/75/165
3100 RPM @ 100kph with R14/75/195

Can't wait to find a nice set of 16x7" rims and put some 50 profiles on.
Then she will look great and cruise at lower RPM!!!

don't go too low with the profile or you will lose the advantage...I have 16x7.5 with 60 profile...all i'm lacking is a 200kw V8😂

I had some 225/50-16's on the back of my Bay years ago and the outside diameter (rolling radious) was pretty close to the stock 14" tyre (620mm ø).... Don't go too low in profile if your looking for a gearing advantage....

thats not correct mate,
the width of the tyre will make no difference at all with engine revs as the tyre still rotates the same distance to make a full rotation.

If the rim is the same then you will get a small advantage with those tyre sizes.... the greater width of the 195 will not need to stretch as far across the rim as the 165.... The advantage will be minimal though.... The funny thing is, I have seen some tyres (from different manufacturers) with the same size specs and fitted to the same rims, to actually have differing profiles and rolling radious....

It pays to have a measure tape handy when selecting your tyres.... The brands vary a lot, even if the specs are the same.....

I thought the height of the tyre wall is a function of aspect ratio and tyre width, so what fozee said is correct, isn't it?.

Sorry, i misread who the original quote in the post was written by and therefore meant that i thought fozee was correct.

Kevo, pretty sure aspect ratio is just that - a ratio of sidewall height to Tyre width, so stands to reason that a 225/60/15 would have a larger diameter than a 205/60/15 - but not by very much (60% of 20mm, 12mm difference in diameter)

Just remember.... The aspect ratio is not an accurate measure.... Tyres vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, even if the specs are the same.... It is only a 'ballpark' scale.... The best and only way to figure it all out, is to check with the manufacturer and find out what the actual outside diameter of a given tyre is expected to be when fitted to your chosen rim.... If its that much of an issue....

Attached is a snappy little calculator that might make the decisions a little EZR... But be warned.... This calc has been designed with the syncro in mind.... But it can be modded for most uses....

id strongly suggest trying 215/75/15'Lts all round
ive had desert deullers on my twinny running a subie and the difference in gearing ratios is awsome these tyres also have a very strong side wall that i find reduces the cornering roll and wind wobble they keep my twin cab stable even with the needle stuck hard at zero (allbeit on the wrong side)ie foot to the floor 8500rpm in 4th:thumb
its just a car for f*%k sake

I picked up a set of 17" the other day.
I think they are Merc replicas.

They are 17"x7" with 225x55 Dunlop Sports max tyres.
I would really like ot lower it and have it in the grass. My first step would be to fit some stiffer shockers as the front tires have already scraped the top of the inside wheel arch.

They have dramatically reduced my highway rpm and lessened the steering wheel wobble on the road.

hey if you havn't already done it, i really recommend putting the timing belt covers back on. At least the parts that cover the distributors and the front of the engine. That little gap at the front above the pully likes to eat little bolts, sockets or anyting else like a few small rocks very easily.

I've seen a timing belt rip in 1/2 on one of these engines because the covers were left off, and a small bolt fell in where it shouldn't. Luckily it was stopped in time before it slipped a tooth and destroyed the valve train.

Oh yeah and I was going to say, the last one of these engines I tuned ran at around 1800-1900 rpm at 100km/h in 5th gear, using the soarer 5 speed auto and a 3.? VL turbo diff.. can't remember the exact ratio. What i'm saying is you can probably do with a gear ratio change to really maxamize the fuel economy capabilty of that engine.

Not much more can be done to the auto to improve the final drive ratio. I think the third gear ration is 0.91:1 for this particular box.
The only optin i know of is to go back to the manual and have custom ratios developed/or hope that someone is selling the exact box i need. Both highly unlikely at this stage due to the costs.

I know the guys up here in brissy that did the tune on the Dual cab with the V8 in it. They reckon it was pretty insane power wise but the crazy thing was it only had a stock 1600 box behind it. It was doing like 4000 at 100km/hr on the freeway which these engines do not like for long periods of time. He actuall stripped the ring and pinion under acceleration in top gear just puling out to pass another car from 100!!! I remember the owner at the time calling my Uncle's business wanting another box but my uncle being the absolute purist that he is refused to work on the car as he told the guy " mate I know nothing about it and nor do I want to !!" not sure what box the owner at the time ended up putting behind it but heard it ended up with some custom ratios.

Personally the only way you'll solve your ratio problems and match them to the characteristics of the engine is use 2 litre case, go back to manual and get a full custom gear set from albins. Aaron Roberts(black kombi with 20B rotor) has done this with minimual problems considering the 500hp he has at the rear wheels and the way he launches it!!!

Im looking into diff ratios. Im not sure if VW released different diff ratios for different model autos but i will soon find out.
Surely someone out there must have altered the diff ration in one of there buses, everything else has been done to VW's at least once!!!

It does seem that going back to a manual is the most obvious option, maybe the cheapest too.
