I brought a new Passat TDI a couple of months ago and its approaching its first service.

Im of two minds whether to return it to the dealer for servicing, or take it to someone who specilaises in Volkswagens.

The dealer I brought the car off forgot to bolt the exhaust hanger back on after they installed the towbar, so i have lost some confidence.

But is it worth while in the long run to have a Volkswagen service history for potential warranty or the resale of the car?

All cars are the same these days. Not like the old days taking your kombi in for a tune.
Theres no adjustments in a new car, everything is taken care of electronically. Drop the oil, blow out the air filter. change the plugs every 3rd service. It doesnt make an ounce of difference taking it to a dealer. There's no skill at all in a new car service.

It takes the recycled oil that came out of the beetle doesnt it? Strained through a sock of course.

guess it comes down to personal preference.... some like the dealers to look after a new car and some like specialists to look after them.
go wherever you feel comfy with them doing the work.
see.... air and water do mix 😉

I have always serviced mine via the dealer. Our new beetle had gearbox problems (Auto) and even though the car was out of warranty by the time they figured it out, they still fited a brand new one free of charge. I don't think they would have done that if we hadn't been going to them for our regular services.

I owned a brand new beemer never took it to the dealer for services in the 3 years that I owned it. And it didn't make any difference at all when I went to sell it.
And the guys at BMW where very nice to me when it also needed warranty work done even though it had never been in there shop for any services and I didn't even buy it from them either.
Ian did the services for me so done for ...... favours. LOL:P

Thanks Ian :thumb

But you will loose out when you find out the cost of the oil. It doesn't use the same oil as the 70 beetle. I think its 00 - 40 SAE or close to it. Volkswagen dealers charge $66 for the oil when you get a service.

Thats a good point. If Volkswagen are the only ones who have ever touched it then it takes away a few arguments.

Out of warranty stuff will always be up to the dealer. Some go beyond the call. A friend of ours wrote off her brand new barina pulling out of the dealer driveway. They went back inside and gave her another one.

Which reminds me of another story... I cant remember what model but some woman drove her new holden home and pulled the oil cap off, noticed it was empty and shoved the garden hose in there. Got back in the car to go and abuse the dealer and threw a rod out. If she hadnt of gone off her nut and unwittingly confess to what she'd done, she might have got a new car as well. There was no oil or water left in it by the time it was tilt trayed in.

Back on topic.. If anything happens within warranty period and it has been serviced by a licenced mechanic there is nothing at all they can say. Ultra Tune spent a lot of money to prove it. Precedence has been set.., now its part of law.

you will need o-30 grade oil, Castrol SLX Longlife 2. Pick up the oil and filter from spare parts counter, go to service department for service. It will cost you $44 for labour instead of paying marked up prices for parts.

It's very hard to be a 'specialist' with a late-model, new-tech car that has only been on sale for a matter of months...

But having said that, most of these cars require nothing more than an oil and filter each 10Kkm. Until, of course, something goes wrong... proven dealer servicing can make a BIG difference at warranty time 😉

sorry but that is not what i meant by "specialist"....
i meant that some people like to take it to someone who "specialises" in old vdubs but also does new ones.

Take it to the dealer for the first service, then go to your approved mechanic of choice after that. Did you get it in Newcastle? You will need to take it back to them for warranty issues. I bought my T4 in Cahtswood but took it to Newcastle for it's first service and warranty issues. They don't like me in there... I think my Kombi may be flagged on the computer after I have had a few little "episodes"...first service they sprayed a greasy armourall type stuff on front and back bumpers..when i say spray I mean SPRAY...so I wiped it off the paintwork either side and saw my paint colour on the cloth.... they gave me a sheet to fill out, you know those customer satisfaction sheets? well I wrote "If I had wanted that shit sprayed on my car I would have asked you to do it, you will never see my car except for warranty"...trouble was every time I took it back, it would come out with something else wrong. Try driving in to get the air conditioning button replaced, and driving out with the exhast heat sheild broken and rattling...wasn't broken when I went in that morning :duh
My power windows on the passenger side have been crap for ages, only working when they want and having to open the door and slam it again to get it to work..took it back..they couldnt find anything wrong...took it back again only this time they decided to rip the door lining off and popped 2 holes down the lower part where the inside clips pulled through...didnt notice it straight away...found it, took it back and the manager agreed they had done the damage and then waited for the plastic welding guy to repair (they should have replaced it, but he did do a good job). Ignition switch went on me late last year, being in Volkswagen Assist, got it towed to dealer as it couldn't be started.
I am now in the tenuos position of waiting to hear back from VW after finding rust in the windscreen, powder coating peeling off the sliding door handle, the Kombi logo peeling off the tailgate and finding a noise coming from my gearbox that they have described as possibly being a reverse gear idler... now for the clincher..bought her new end July 2003 and I have done 61,000klms so I am out of warranty.
All of my servicing is done by the mechanic I have always used for our VW's and I am happy to tell you where to take your Passat, 70Beetle. PM Me. I will say that the dealer has changed hands here in Newcastle in the last 6 months, lets see what happens now.

Thanks for the advice T4Mel. I brought the car in Sydney around the corner from our Sydney office. Got a price from the 'new' Newcastle dealer but it wasn't competitive compared to the Sydney dealers.
