hello all:

For those of you who know me, or have seen photos, you will know that i have been growing my hair for 4.5 years, and had it in dreadlocks for 3.5 years...

...i have been offered a job today (which i need) that requires me to cut my hair... something im not looking forward to.

for three and a half years, my dreads have been a part of my life: an icon, a beacon to my personality if you will. a little crazy, yet controlled.
Drinking myself silly tonight in the hopes that alcohol will subdue my indecision... but whilst im moderately sober i'll put the conundrum to you.... to cut or not to cut?

I had dreds for over 10 years which wasn't a problem for my job at the time - I got them all cut off and combed out when I wanted a career change.

I'd say go for it - it's a good cause (invest in your future - you wont regret it) - Why not also have a collection for charity as well? At least it turns the whole thing into a positive event.

As far as losing a part of your identity - yup - it takes quite a lot of getting used to.

The biggest thing for me was that I found it sad that people judged my ability and character on the length / style of my hair - but then I'm sure that having dreds for 3 years - you would have come across this plenty already.

Good luck with the new job.

In a word. Cut. You can easily grow your dreadlocks back in the future if your situation changes.

I'm prepared to bet that if you cut your hair and get the job, that you will never again have dreadlocks and you will look back on that time as a phase in your life that you have gone past.

As an example. I was a hippie for years but I never looked like one. In nearly 25 years of that life style I never once got busted for consuming a certain prohibited green vegetable matter, because i didn't look like a hippie. I had short hair. It just made life so much simpler.

When I dressed up I wore Levi boot jeans, R.M. Williams boots, a T shirt and a well cut jacket. At the same time I was a hippe on a hill near Bega. The locals liked us and we were voted onto the local Hall committee. They had no idea what we were really like in private.

It's really easy to be dread sporting person while power dressed in a pin striped 3 piece suit and working in the city. It's all in your head. That's the one part of you that they can't control.

Cut your hair, it's time for a change.

if only i had time to raise some money!

the plan was to cut them for the Shave for a cure next year... unfortunately they have to be gone by monday, so theyre coming off on saturday morning.
party tonight to farewell them. It'll be hard, but i think it will be worth it.

...

... BUT I DONT WANT TO! WAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!

It's only hair. It'll grow back. Cut it whilst you can still say to it "damn hair, you're going when I say so". Unlike Bazza and I who are losing the fight in saying when our hair can go. LOL.

Cut it. Do your three months probation and then grow it again. When they say they are firing you, take them for all they are worth because of descrimination and that your religion requires you to have long hair.

I can't believe in this day and age you get judged because of your hair. I had long hair for years as well.

Or keep your hair and wear a Hijab or turbin and they won't say a bloody word because they will be to scared. I am guessing it is too late now for this.

Is the hair wearing the person or is the person wearing the hair?

What sort of job fish?

Is it worth cutting them off for?

I voted yes, there is a time and place for everything, maybe the time of the dread has been and now gone.
