I'm unsure as to wether my old Volksy can be registered.

I bought it from SA a few years ago and when it arrived in QLD it had no aluminium id plate. It's an old split van and there is a body number punched into the rhs of the engine bay indicating its year but no ally plate above it. That's been removed at some time, leaving just the holes where the rivets once were.

So my question is, can it be registered without this old plate?

Has anyone had any experience like this, Aus wide or in particular in QLD.

Cheers

Paul.

I sold my last car without one, my paintshop lost it after painting, the guy who bought it off me didn't have any issues from what I know.

Also depends where you go and who you get at the DOT, when I registered my 59, the lady came out and did a full check over of everything, plates, vin, eng number etc etc. However when I did the oval 2 weeks ago, nobody even wanted to see that the car existed, so having no plate would matter in that case. Depends how lucky you are!

No worries - an alloy plate is only important on cars made after 1972? for the Aussie design rules (ADRs)

Your missing alloy plate is only a build plate for ID by VW dealers etc. Your chassis number is the 'identity' of the car

Well, if ever there was a definitive answer... Who knows?

It's been sat slowly being dismantled before repair work begins and this thing has been bugging me silly. I don't want to go to the bother of a resto if the answer is simply that it can't be done. Thanks for all your replies (more always welcome) and it looks like I'll be taking a trip to the local transport office prior to buying all of those repair panels just to be on the safe side!

Cheers

I got blue belle registered easy as without the alloy plate.

They just went into the bug, checked the number on the arch and said 'fine' off u go!...and yes, it was QLD.

Shouldn't be any different than that for you.

All you shoudl be told you need is following
Proof of ownership (whether you have old rego in different state, or recipt of a sale)
safety certificate (u need to have this on u when u drive to rta.)
application for rego (you have to grab before hand...something about having it with u on day incase police pull u up)
oh, and ctp insurance, which u need to get on the day u drive to the RTA. (you need to pick it up before hand)

so long as u have these items, u can drive straight (and only to) the RTA without having to purchase a one day permit to travel (which on average costs $60) BUT, u have to do it ALL on the same day.

I usually find grabbing it all takes about 2 hours...ctp insurance is the longest bit to it all, cause u have to travel there on the actual day...and they need the most info.

Having done it twice this is what I woudl recommend u do:
Grab application from RTA and have it filled out ready.
When u take car in for tune up/final inspection, get that mechanic to do the safety certificate
When u get his/her call to say car is ready, (so long as it is before 1.00pm) go grab the CTP insurance papers for it (make sure u have all the details from mechanics) If it is after 1.00pm, u may wish to wait until next morning
Then go pick up car...and that means u have all paperwork ready and on u..and u can go straight for mechanics to the RTA.

U need to be at the RTA by 4.00pm for vehicle inspections. And not all RTA do them, so check which one closest to your mechnics does them...(usually the mechanics can tell u)

Hope this all helps.
cheers

i have been through this a couple of years ago. I bought a 75L from canberra and re-registered it in NSW

Hear are some down loads that may have reference to your problem
http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/myrta/downloads/rta1075_j1203.pdf
http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/rego_new.html

Hear is a copy/paste from a previous post

I bought a 75 that didnt have a compliance plate. They took it off to restore the car and spray under neath the plate. They just lost it

They passed the car on a Blue slip but they failed it on a Unregistered Vehicle - No Compliance Plate form.
You needed to tick -
1 Vehicle Make
2 Year model or date of manufacture
3 Vin Number

These had to be provided in 2 colums
1 Detail from vehicle
2 Detail from acceptable documentation

They failed me on Date of Manufacture from the vehicle. I was told i had to send "suitable information" of to RTA Vehicle Standard Section.
I rang them up and they were not helpful. They said you just keep sending and i will tell you when to stop. Wouldnt give me a phone number or name of who i could talk to.

I went back and re-read the Unregistered Vehicle - No Compliance Plate form (as i had never seen one before) At the top it said " date of manufacture can be detrmined from VIN number" I rang back to the blue slip guy and said cant we just tick it cause we can get the info of the VIN. He said " I dont know haw to read them"
I down loaded from a website how to read the VIN and he passed it - phew!!

One step out of the way

Then i had to go to the RTA to book in for a VIIU(?) inspection.

I turned up to the RTA and said i wanted an insection

They said "why?" - how the heel do I know. Never done this before??? I want it cause the blue slip man said i needed one!

The RTA was certain i didnt?
I stopped argueing and agreed when i realised alls he wanted to do was give me some rego plates

So - in a nut shell, it aint THAT hard.... but it does depend on what side of the bed the people get out of.
In the end mine was a piece of piss, but it could have easily have turned into a nightmare if i had to PROVE the date of manufacture.

Now i hope this is what you are after - if you are talking engineering papers cause it is a chop top, I cant help you

By the way - welcome

TTFN

Barry

PS
you cant get a compliance plate replace in NSW

Thanks for all your help. It's at least reassuring to know that it can be done.

I'm going to print this post out and hang it in on the wall!

Thanks all.

You erroneously believe the body build plate (missing on your car) is a Compliance Plate required by the Australian Design Rules for legal registation of a new vehicle in all/any states of Australia.

It isn't: your year-model car was not fitted with a Compliance Plate when new (they were't invented yet!) and does not need a Compliance Plate for rego, just a legit chassis number and engine number and road-worthy condition as determined by the State

Hope this makes the situation clearer...

Well, it was fitted with something like a VIN plate because the mark where it once was is clear to the eye and so are the two rivet holes... If 57 Chookshed is around perhaps he could shed some light on it? I bought it off him a few years back. I think this bus was the original 57 Chookshed!

Still, sounds like I wont be needing one, whatever it was that was once there. The stamped numbers in the body identify it as a '58, if that helps. However, it originally had single tail lights so it was probably born in '57. Whatever it is, it's nice to know that it should make it on the road without too much fuss at some time or other.

This has been a nice introduction to Aussieveedubbers. Thanks for all your help.
