I personally don't see how it demonstrates that at all.Until Jo checks and gets all the facts about what happened then at the moment it would only demonstrate that a choice was made to employ someone else for the position, which is purely a matter for the employer to decide. It would only be descrimantry if the choice was based apon her being female and if thats the case then they should rot. Without drifting too far off topic,Male chauvanism has and does still exist,as does Female chauvanism...

think of it this way jo...

at the time YOu asked, they really did need a senior...and once he/she was hired they could take on another apprentice...however, being two/three weeks later, they realised someone of your calibre and work ethics would already have been offered a perfect position with another employer, and thusly hired the next best thing....a bloke

😁

come - on...its for real

Actually, where i worked before it happened alot. You can't have new apprentices join (old ones can stay on for x period of time) but u have to hire seniors quickly. Once you've done that, you can look for apprentice again. And boss assumes good people gone...
dubless. 🥲

Jo, I am going the devils advocate here. :vader

A couple of blokey places I have worked have had a no chicks policy.

Or a no young cute chicks policy.

Nothing to do with the chick, they could be an excellent employee. Problem is the other employees, in your case other young aprentices and mechanics can be a whole new world of pain. Balance of staff in a workshop is hard enough without having a girl in then all the blokes go all funny. Fact of life. It is not about your abilities but theirs. Plenty of good workplace romances but plenty of bad ones. Bosses dont need that sometimes.

Good luck to you Jo, hardest thing is no one will give you that to your face as it breaches every guideline.

Ohhhhkay this topic has been busy!

First of all, as i said before, i don't want to work there anymore, i simply want to know why they did what they did.

And distractions (romances) in the workplace? How is a workshop different from any other workplace, such as an office? It shouldn't be.

And why would a young lady want to be a mechanic? Why not!? This is 2007, not 1957!:jesus

Went and had a chat to the boss at the place, and he said that after i left they changed their mind about putting an apprentice on, and asked TAFE to send the person who they thought would be the best apprentice. The guy they sent was only marginally ahead of me in classwork, and probably worse attendance. So go figure! Oh well, over it now..
