I've long toyed with the idea of hot dip galvanising a floorpan.

Do you think it would be possible? There's a lot of holes there that would fill with gal. Is it possible to keep it out of the torsion bar splines, fuel lines etc?

What about a body shell? I guess it would probably warp the panels yeah?

I've seen it done. Can't remember where though. I have an idea that Chesil speedsters in the UK have gal'd floorpans. BTW, All euro cars are gal'd these days from what I here, but I guess the steel is gal coated before it's pressed into panels for them.

it wouldnt be hot dipped.

I cant get 2mm duct work hot dipped. If i do it comes out like a prune that has been left in the sun, dried, dehydrated and then some.

To "guarantee" it wont twist it needs to be about 4mm minimum

Best you could bo is dip it in cold gal paint i suppose

I dont think the floor pan would twist it would be an effort to keep the zinc out of the critical areas Its only about 200 degrees C

the body might warp due to the flat panels n such

blasting and powder coating would be better
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

I'm mainly paranoid about painting and then having rust come through.

Particularly concerned about the vents in the back. You can blast in there but how do you know for sure you have adequate paint coverage down the sides. With Jays car sand kept falling into the engine bay for ages after it was finished, and that was done by very respected people. If unpainted sand comes out, presumably there is unpainted metal in there as well. Same with doing the stripping by chemical dipping. The chemical will get everywhere, but sprayed on paint I am not so sure.

its better t oblast that area but you will have to blow and turn the body shell over a few times to getthe sand out completely

you can lay the paint of a bit thicker when painting that area

We had a floorpan for a buggy hot dipped up here a few years ago.Came out looking good but all tunnel internals were a pain to get unblocked..as someone forgot to seal the tubes before it went into the tank...The front floorpan split when the car had an impact and the floorpan was impossible to reweld. I personally wouldn't reccommend it for the pan as chemcal treatments are more flexible and if in doubt submerge it!!! Cold Gal paint is very good and chemically bonds to the steel to give the same protection as hot dippng. I've used it several times, including problem areas on the buggy with good results.

hi, you cannt "seal" any parts that are to be dipped, the air inside expands and the metal will split in a pressure explosion.
modern cars are "electo" galanised, a similar process to chrome plating so the galv goes on very thin and only where its wanted with out warping the pannels.
find your local lamp post galvaniser, the quality of a lamppost is usually very good, (feel & look how smooth they are!) they might help you! and they have huge tanks!
