Ok, so after a fairly quick 5 week wait my certificate arrived yesterday.
Now, I know there are threads on birth certificates already, but they are a bit old so I thought I'd start a new one.
Unfortunately they don't give out engine numbers anymore, but they did tell me that the engine number is a 55/56 engine, so I can only guess its the original engine?? dunno!
Colour is not mentioned either, but going by the colour of the dash, and roof it has to be Reed green, which is a correct colour for my year and interior, however under the front compartment and spare wheel well area, its all very much looking like Jungle green, unless someone painted that, I don't understand what colour the car is......but the bulk of it appears to be Reed green. Does anyone have any pics of nice looking Reed green beetles?
It was built on the 18th April 1955, almost exactly 25 years before I was born(by 2 days, I wish it was a 16th April car)
and it was shipped to Kensley, London, so somewhere along the lines it made a long journey to Oz.
my only other questions are, M400....what is it, can't find it? and 3 CKD(completely Knocked Down) what does this mean?
Any helpful hints would be great.
Thanks

Does this have hearts, 3 bolt bonnet and clunker doors?

it does have hearts, by clunker doors I'm guessing you mean when you close the door, it clunks twice quickly for a good shut, if you pull lightly, one clunk then a second clunk to close fully. They are ribbed too by the way. When you say 3 bolt bonnet, you mean hinge to bonnet, or where? That I'm not sure of, but will check.
Yeah I gave them the engine number and they said they couldn't read it properly on the data they had, but they confirmed the engine number I gave was a 55/56 engine, so I don't know 100%
It has MADE IN WEST GERMANY on a plate in the spare wheel well, and the birth certificate says, Country of Destination was Kensley, London/England. So I doubt highly it was from Melbourne, unless thats what the CKD means, knocked down and re-assembled in Melbounre, but why from Germany, via London, to be built in Melbourne????
not that I can remember, I will have a look though. Why would it say Kensley, London, are they often wrong or print stuff incorrectly, is it not possible that it was shipped over by someone from London at some point?
Ok fair enough.
I drove it to work today, so I'll go have a look in my lunch break.
If no MKA, then does that mean its an import for sure, as in imported by VW Australia, or could it just have been personally imported by someone in the past 52 years at some point maybe?
anyone know what M400 is, its the only M code on the cert.?
Not sure about the m400? ribbed doors are clunker doors and the pillar should have 3 indents in it. 2 rubber stops and the latch. The bonnet should have 4 holes for the hinges (2 each side) and a seperate bolt hole for the bonnet stand. while your under there does it happen to have a triangle plate under the top bonnet badge inside the bonnet? Would just like to know.
Thanks

My Karmann Ghia 60 was destined for Fiji acc to a birth cert I got from the prev owner
shipping to Fiji would have been through Aus .
shipping in 55 could have been to Aus via London at the time. Ties with the Mother country / Queen were a lot stronger then
ALSO maybe they had excess stock in UK then as it was at that time the beetles were very cheap and reliable and in demand inAus.
ALSO the Brit supply of vw cars were right hand drive as in Aus ...as opposed ...og German being left .
want any vw bits old but like me, Made in Germany!!!
Ok, had a look.
Turbo54
its got the 3 indent, clunker ribbed doors.
it has the big thick hinges, 2 bolt holes on each and one bolt on the passenger side for the bonnet stand, is that right?
it doesn't have a triangle plate under the badge, should it?
TYP114
it does have an MKA number, MKA5623, now does this definately mean it was built in Melbourne 100%, why would it say delivered to London, are they usually that wrong?
The other thing as I said, the under bonnet area is a totally different green to the rest of the car, under the bonnet, around the whole fuel tank/spare wheel area and top of guards area inside. I'm guessing it has been painted this colour under there at some stage for some reason as it stops fairly roughly where it all meets the dash? maybe a repair or just some random colour change, don't know?
you make some good points Bushed, could be any of the above you suggest I suppose. Bulk lot storage of RHD in London for shipping to other RHD countries, or anything really.

well there you go, good to learn all this sort of stuff, the more I know about it the better!
I'd like to get to the bottom of the London thing, mistake or other, maybe Kensley being the area has something to do with it....might do some quick searching.
Hey mate, correct bonnet for that year... congratulations! These are rare as and whatever you do don't bend it. The ones with the triangle plate are even worse to find. I would take it off when you have time and rust proof inside in mounting sections. These tend to rust badly and you will be hard pressed to find another.

Birth certificates can be very wrong, my neighbour has a blue German '68 beetle, with securit glass, he sent away for a Birth certificate, it came back saying it was a CKD RHD car painted black with white interior and shipped to the USA! :o not even close.

my bonnet has some pretty bad rust, only in one spot though. Its the area about 8cm long on the passenger side that takes all the strain when the bonnet is up, its rusted thorugh, cracked and pretty well f*cked, but it is the only spot and could be fixed with a weld in plate, buts thats it, otherwise its pretty sweet.
Is the Sekurit glass a sign of anything(?), as mine has it all round, original and uncracked which is pretty damn good....not 100% on the windscreen though, but every other piece has sekurit etched into it!
