Don't worry mate once he has lost his licence three times, spent thousands in fines, even more thousands in fuel bills, maybe then he will settle for a turbo dub like his old man. I watched my mates go through this when we were all 18-21, they gave me shit for driving a kombi but i had the last laugh, never got a ticket, never lost my licence and still got 450 k's to a tank.

Damo.
This is my Volkswagen, there are many like it, but this one is mine. Without me my Volkswagen is useless, without my Volkswagen, I am useless.

I agree with damo.

(especially on the friggen fuel consumption)...

Its a worry having that extra power underfoot... self control in a young person (especially a high testosterone male like myself) is a thin line.... lucky i learnt my lesson the easy way without blood shed (THANK GOD!) in my little coupe

but an rx7 would be way too tempting for me 😀 when it comes to heavy footing... Your son is probably wiser than me though.

i have to say, after today's klubfest, i regret not getting a lil' dub 🙁. At least with chuggin' cruisers you haven't got enough power underfoot to break something or loose it... too easily.

Went through exactly this problem...
Raised with the "Bug" but lost interested & went to the "Dark Side"....
We have gone through a R100, RX7 & now the mazda wagon....lost licence, fines...& the saga continues....
So its something they will have to grow out of unfortunately...

I blame the parents. Was the kid dropped on his head or starved of oxygen when young?

Or was there just a lack of quality time in the backseat as a kid?

Or maybe its drugs.

I've gone through the same thing. My eldest has a civic but he's had nothing but problems. He's gone through radiators, water pump (now that's a great little item as you basically have to dismantle the car and engine just to get at it!) wheels, tyres and exhaust! Luckily my number 2 son has a baja in the garage we're putting together so I may just have to disown the eldest😏

It's been worked a bit. He's only had it a week and he's already complaing about the fuel useage....funny it was one of the things I warned him about.

Oh well each to there own....all you can do is try and guide them. People used to say that about me and volkswagens....actually they still do.

Needless to say when he comes and visits I've banned him from parking it in the drive way.

Atleast he's still got the kombi even if it has a suby.
Maybe I did drop him on his head when he was a baby...😵

It's called individuality, different strokes for different folks. But u must be dissapointed.
I can happily say i have 5 who cant wait to drive a kombi, even the eldest when when we got our first 85T3 CaravelleCl said" what you want me to get in that, youre joking wheres our car".But now it's splitty this, splitty that, told her(16yrsold) to start with a golf....
I say wait until he has to insure it for himself and then run the bloody thing. then show him a sweet bug/baja.
And then u get to say I told u so.
Keep the steering and the propulsion seperate . Still a Kombi...

It's all good, until it's bad, i suppose

Stanley,

Put son on Ebay then buy another one with the profits, keep going until you get one with Volkswagen in his veins.

Problem solved,

Matt.

He will return to the force when he has to put new O rings and apex seals in the engine, this is the time when change out of $5.5k+ will not happen (to do a good job) --no matter what ANYONE may tell you.

he'll get over it. and so will you. :P

boxers are the 2nd best motors in the world. Sorry, but rotors are awesome. it's a shame VW didn't pick up the patent off Wankel and NSU and do it properly. Have you driven it yet? You have to love a motor that just keeps revving and revving and then get's the nastiest, fattest torque band when you turbo it. 👍

But don't worry stanley, I still love you and the 1600 turbo. 🙂

my missus engine rebuild including new o rings seals etc plus new rotors plus installation cost less than this and from a reputable rotary workshop and the engine in my buggy is now 20 years old and still going strong unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation about rotaries mostly from when they were first introduced back in the 60's.

Just let me say at this stage that this was meant as a tongue in cheek stab at rotaries and my son who for years has put up with me bagging them mostly in jest.

I'll admit I wasn't a huge fan of rotaries especially when you go to the Jamboree and 70% of the field is made up of them. But I've learnt a bit about them and like the crazy Germans who decided to put an air cooled engine in the rear of the car someone else thought outside of the square.

Like them or not they are unique.

Put an air cooled in the front of the RX7 while his back is turned!

I saw a Kingswood with a rotary some years ago,
some sort of freaky "exchange student(*)" taxi in Japan.
(*=a deal between Holden and Mazda)

So you wouldn't be the only freak in the side show.

As long as you can keep him from racing on the street, I think he will be fine.

I guess my old man thought the same when I started playing with VWs instead of Chevs which I grew up in!

As you say - all you can do is guide them....eventually he may find his own path back to VW fold. 🙂

weeeeeeeeeeell-- I had a ser 5 13bt rebuilt 12 months ago by Tony at Mr Rorary the cost was $6780.00 and that was using second hand end plates and a couple of other S/H bits. Tony also didn't charge me for about $250 worth of seals , I'm guessin that you did'nt need new end plates and rotor housings and by "new rotors"you're refering to apex seals--was it a turbo or N/A ? just interested--did you keep the missus car after it was fixed ??

Boy will he notice the fuel bill. I love rotaries.

I come from a long line of modifiers and restorers. Mostly aussie iron and motorcycles.

Hmm My theory is you must of let him have way too much water growing up and now he's accustom to it and just has to have water in his diet. Had you deprived him more of water he may have realised AIR is the way to go and not looked back. It's like a heroine addiction. Once you have it you have water, you want more. Not that it is right. Not by a long shot. With time and patience I am sure you can wean him off his water habit. If you need to have an intervention I am sure there are plenty of people on here that would be willing to help. :P
