For those of us familiar with 70's UK Football, the name Derek Dougan may ring a bell. He played for my team Wolverhampton Wanderers, and partnered George Best up front for Northern Ireland. I saw him play once as a young fella, when we beat Norwich 3-1 at Molineux. Seeing him break the crossbar with a header is forever etched in my mind.
The Doog was a legend around the Midlands and was just as much a character off the field, as he was on it. He did a lot for the game, and was the key instigator in the creation of players rights and true professionalism of players.
You never think you reach a point where your childhood heroes pass away. RIP Derek Dougan, you legend.

I was telling one of my boys about him the other week as they showed a Wolves game on TV. My school played in the same colours so there was always that connection and you're right about him being a character 'very outspoken' I think the term is nowadays. Yea very sad when they go, George Best was my hero when I was a kid even though I'm a Londoner🙁
