most of the EMPI suppliers have those cheesy yellow ones...
are you looking to eliminate torsion bars, or just raise it a touch?

I would not run those only!!

i thought about this for the sake of adjustability and such, but you have to take a few things into account.

1. there are heaps of aftermarket torsion bars available. heaps of people have experience making VWs handle using the torsions bars too. any decent quality coil overs are likely to cost more than the torsion bars as you have to have a shock that will support the coil spring as well.
2. the "shock" towers and mounts on beetles were designed to take "shocks", not spring loads. you'd need to brace things and add strength to the shock mounts to account for for spring loads if you wanted to use coil overs.

Still, coils are the best forms of springs. If you can cope with the mods needed to use them, they offer the best flexibility for adjustment and damping. It's also a damn site easier to change the rear ride height.

The reason is that (being an ex ricer -WRX-) I like the flexibility of a shock I can trim quickly for ride and hight mysef without needing a workshop to reset for me.
I do however hear you all in that it will not be painless.
As I said --probably a stupid question.
Thanks for the reply's,
Cheers , Al .

I'm looking to replce the shocky's with adjustable coil overs in order to give an easy fine tuning capability (+/- 25/30 mm within a 50 mm drop) to the rear end .

I would use brass bushings or bearings instead of the rubber / urethane, and strengthen the rear shock area as Pete said, or ove the top mount I guess...
After adjusting the rear torsions a few times you will get quicker at it!!

Hi Brendan,
thanks for the link yep , thats exactly the thing , but paying 850 euros for a pair is beyond re--farkin--diculous , everyone has to make a quid and I'll never knock that , but I'm not putting his kids through school and feeding his drug habit as well ( and with those prices he's got to be on something).
Thanks for the links though,
Cheers , Al .

Don't forget that the coil overs that xorange666x mentioned are only adjustable for firmness of ride not ride height. Another option would possibly be air adjustables, I had these on my buggy many moons ago and worked pretty well, just pump them up for more lift or let out air for lower ride. They lasted for around 5 years knocking crap out of them off road so should last pretty well on a road car.BTW these were used in conjunction with the torsion bars not instead of.

Sounds good , wouldn't know where I might find em and/or bouts how much they'd run out at by any chance , exactly the thing, I need hight adjust , I think the yellow fixed ones are to long by a fair chalk though I'm having a problem finding out what the installed on ground run(compressed) length in a 62 beetle of these would be.
Anyone readin know ??

I don't know what they're called but they were meant for adjusting the height when towing heavy trailers/caravans if that helps at all.
