while my engine is ou is there anything i should do?
un bolt your brakes (yes this means taking the 36mm nuts off the axles) once u have done that unbolt the bolts that hold the backing plate on, undo the handbrake cable and brake line now remove that brake assembly,
now u need to get the bearing off, u can use a set of vice grips and a hammer, hold the outer race of the bearing with the vice grips and tap on the end of the axle with the hammer, use plenty of WD40 and move around in a circle.
now unbolt the spring plate (use a jack which is chained to the shock mount to raise the spring plate and undo the bolts, slide the axle out and then lower the spring plate slowly until it is no longer under torsion.
now at the gearbox side.
remove the axle boot, then un do the axle retainer plate bolts and slide the retainer plate down the axle tube (there should be a plastic peice inbetween the reatiner plate and then end of the axle tube slide this down too.
then look inside the open side of the gearbox, u should see the circlip that holds the axle in place, u will need a good pair of long nose circlip pliers to get this off and then the axle will slide out of its side of the diff, there are fulcrum plates on either side of the spade end of the axle remember which way they were in relation to the spade end as they need to go back in so the wear matches the same spot when u re assemble, from memory there is also a big thrust washer in there under the circlip i think.
now you have your axles out!

while your engine is out check and replace your engine mounts, front gearbox mount, torsion bar rubbers, paint your firewall (or get a dress up kit) replace the rear mainshaft seal on your gearbox and if ur cars a bit of a looker give everything a big clean!

cheers that's all i needed. now i just need that proper tool to get the damned 36mm nut off
cheers
36mm socket, 3/4" breaker bar and if it's really tight a length of scaffold pole.
EMPI do a tool that goes onto the nut, you apply pressure with a 1/2" ratchet and then you hit it with a hammer 😉
its better to remove the whole gearbox n axles in one go
then remove them while out of the car
for the instalation its best to have the gearbox on its side in a engine stand as you need to fit the axles and have thje fulcrum plates sitting in the correct spot this is much easier to do with the box on its side then the axles can go in and use some tie wire to hold it in place
