Hi

iam about to fit a new gear shift shaft bushing, the one in the tunnel. Can anyone advise if the serrated end points towards the back of the car or the front?

I totally agree with 555Bug.

If you have instructions follow them precisely and dont take shortcuts. I think i had my shaft in and out about 3 times.

They are right it's a real pain of a job.
The taper goes to the rear and the steel ring goes on when it's fitted.
I have found that it can be easier if I tighten the plastic bush into a smaller ring with a bit of tie wire that is done so that it is easy to remove it after the bush is fitted.
Otherwise, use long nosed pliers, a bit of grease and lots of patience.
Then leave the steel ring that should be on the gearshift rod where it is and fit the ring after the rod is in.
Take the rod out through he little hole in the front, clean it up with some emery cloth and grease it well before it goes back in.
When it's in daub grease all over the whole shebang, put the gearshift lever back in an hope that you never need to do it again.
