I'm having some issues with my oval's 36hp motor, its a very intermittant problem which can occure after driving for 10mins, or not occur at all over a 1 hour drive, maybe not for 2-3 drives, maybe each drive.

Basically, what happens, while driving the engine cuts out suddenly, but will remain running as the car is in motion but only under its own power if i have it in gear on decceleration with the clutch out, I can't accelerate at all or rev the engine at all, if I put my foot on the clutch it dies completely, but I can clutch start it again but still not accelerate or rev. If I pull over, again it dies when you put the clutch in, but I can turn the ignition off and restart the car and it will drive off fine. It might happen again straight away or not at all for the next 2-3 drives, so it doesn't seem to follow a pattern.

My thoughts are something in the ignition like leads, plugs, etc or fuel system, carbie, crap in the tank that might pass through, maybe the fuel pump....but I don't know where to start. Maybe just replace/clean everything?

Hopefully I have explained that well enough, if not ask me for some more info, but I'm after some ideas on what it may be, so if anyone can throw some ideas at me that would be great......HELP!!??

Michael

id say fuel, ignition is more likely to break down under load rather than stall at idle.
check for the hidden filter up front under the tank, otherwise take the screen out the bottom of the tank, and clean out the pump, which has screens in it too...

yeah that was the thought, was just seeing if a few different ideas could point me in the direction of more common things it may be by giving a decent explanation.

is the auto cut off solinoid on your carby faulty?

put the key in the on position (engine off)

slide off the spade clip on your carby and touch it on and off the solionid, you should hear a click.

Sounds more like fuel; filter etc, but on the ignition side of things, the original 36hp dissy has an earth braid that earths the points plate, that is prone to break at its obvious age, and it can give a very intermitant problem.

Sounds like intermittent blockage in the tank.
Easy to diagnose:
undo fuel line at the fuel pump & let it hang. It should flow quite freely as the outlet is below the lowest point of the tank.
Easy to fix temporarily:
Blow it back; by mouth via a length of tube or better via a compressor at the nearest servo.
Permanent fix is to remove the tank and fuel tap & clean them out.

Anthiron, the 28PCI carby (wot a lovely device!) on the 36hp predates the cut-off valves by about 10 years I think!

I have been having the same problem with my 30HP motor and have not had a decent fix for it. The Fuel Tank and filters have been cleaned out and that works for a while and then it gives up again. Did a rebuild of the carburretor works for a while and then gives up again.
I pretty much think it is the age of the motor and it is tired and does not really want to go anymore.

dvs_vw (Michael) if you find a fix can you tell me and I will do vice versa.

ill lay my money here:thumb

fuel usually gives a "drawn out" spluttery stop if so
drain fuel tank from front reconnect fuel line disconect from fuel pump and blow through back to tank to check blockage
its just a car for f*%k sake

I tend to agree.
Fuel usually gives a splutter at low revs/speed and an inconsistent speeding up and down under high revs. Easy way to try fuel loss - drive the motor at high rpm for about 200m if engine runs fine then splutters, your problem will most likely be fuel.

As for the broken earth braided line in the dizzy - this often shows up fine at idle but under revs when the advance weights move it usually causes loss of power or sudden engine loss sometimes regained when the revs drop.

A condenser/capacitor can often show up by having a slow to rev motor, miss firing, backfiring, rough or hunting when reved steady. Another place it shows is on spark plugs & exhaust tip where you will see black deposits ie. unburnt or improperly burnt fuel.

Hope this helps

Check your compression. I had a similar issue with my 36hp some years ago. Would go fine then nothing. Engine would be running but no power. Had to rebuild my engine.
