I've noticed these before on other bugs.. Is it worth sourcing one for my 67 re-build? Are there any other safety mods I should consider?..

IF YOU CAN'T FIT A STEERING COLUMN YOU MAY BE ABLE TO FIT A LATER STEERING WHEEL AS THESE HAD A COLLABSIBLE SECTION IN THEM

Hi Stenny, you will have to make one from a your early column with a donor collapsable ( good welding is required)
Keeping it real !

Silver Bro.. OK.. I gather from what you haven't said that the steering column is not interchangeable.. What models did have that interlacing section in the column?

I fiited a complete 1500-on column to my Oval - I needed to drill extra holes in the dash/shell etc to install it. I don't want to be speared!! (niot that it would make much difference, but every little bit...)

you can put the later column into the earlier housing with a few slight mods to the steering lock plate.

Why copy when you can own an original ?

Getting back to this topic..
I've decided that if I'm to do a mod to the column, it will have to be fairly straight forward.. So I'm thinking the only real option is to find a later column off a standard bug that has the interlacing collapsible section and see if it will fit..

My 67 column measures 944mm (rod only) with a 24mm diameter and the thread to spline section on the head of the rod is 40mm..

The column sleeve is 620mm

Does anyone have a later column that they can measure?

OK.. I went a picked up a late bug steering column (74 I think)..
The rod is the same length as the early beetle with some minor differences.. The huge advantage is that you get to mount all the switches etc from a late bug column.. (Washers, Lights, Hi beam, Indicators etc).. all from the two stalks on the column..
I'll update the resto thread with the pictures and further details;
