anyone able to tell me if my floats have a crack in them will they keep the needle and seat open to flood the cylinders or is my pump without gaskets going to do it.
help please.
The carbs can flood due to a number of reasons:
- Dirt stuck between the needle and seat
- A loose needle and seat
- Worn needle and seat
- A hole in the float so it sinks and doesn't float up and shut the valve
- Too much fuel pressure may overcome the pressure the float applies on the needle and seat. From memory 3.5 to 4 psi is about right.
The best thing to do is pull the carb tops off and check the float and test its operation. I think the correct setting is 10mm from the top cover when closed and it should be allowed to droop to 22.5mm from the top cover.
If you shake the float and it is not full of fuel I'd replace the needle and seats with some new ones. They're available individually or as part of a carby kit. A 1.75 is standard in my 44idfs but I believe a 2.00 is better if your engine produces good power at high revs in high gears.
I hope that ramble helps.
