Ok so one end of my heater cable was broken and same deal with thee acc. cable. So I remove the accelerator cable, no problem. One of the heater cables removes fine. But one gets stuck 1/2 way out and wont budge forward or backwards.

And I go to put the accelerator cable and same deal stuck 1/2 way it moves a few cms backwards or forwards but will not either come back out or go completely through...So am I up shit creek without a paddle or what? Time for a beer I think 😬

Need to see if there's a kink in the sheath at that point. Perhaps you can straighten it if there is, and then the metal ends of the cables will go through.

Not much help I know, sorry. These things are legendary buggers (the heater cables anyway, in a Bus at least).

What sort of vehicle are we working on?

Sounds like the outer cable guide (tube) is damaged/cracked/broken off about half way down the vehicle....

Just an idea,

Try feeding a length of good strong & thick fencing wire down the tube to force the cable back the way it came. When the heater cable comes out at the engine end cut the solid rod bit off the cable (if its still there) then make a small loop (eye) in the end of the old cable and tie some builders string line onto it (the real good strong stuff). Then pull the old cable out through the front dragging the builders line with it, untie the line and attach to new cable & use it to draw the new cable back through. If it gets stuck then you can do the old push/ pull/jiggle, having a person on each end will make it easier but its not impossible on your own - just slower. Remember to grease the new cable as you are feeding it in.

Good luck,

Matt.

Ps. tying a feeder line on before withdrawing any cable is probably a good starting point to remember for the future & so is cutting off the solid rod bits if there are any there.

Its a 56 beetle. I tried some stiff wire, tried jabbing at it with the wire but still wouldn't move, not exactly sure what its caught on. The old wire got about 60cm before it got stuck so its not that far from the end, but can't see that area of heater outer tube through the inspection hole. So not exactly sure what to do.

Ok, so try the thick wire again but from both ends at the same time & 2 people poking & stabbing at it, with some patience you might be able to free it up.

Regards,

Matt.

put your wire in a cordless drill, and spin the wire while feeding it in.
Usually works to dislodge whatever is in there. WD40 or penetrene too should help it.
