Ok so I pulled out the transaxle in my 56 beetle as it was leaking from pretty much everywhere when I picked it up.

Put through a axle bearing/seal kit the other day. Filled up the box yesterday with gear oil and later today realized that it was leaking. It is leaking from between the spline and the outer spacer.

There is some scoring on the inside of the outer spacer, would this be whats causing it.

And just to check, which way does the outer spacer face as this car has been maintained terribly by the previous owner and parts have been put on wrong or the wrong parts so might as well check its on the correct way. Does the face with the beveled outside edge face inwards towards the seal or outwards towards the wheel?

Something I just remembered, I did put the car down with the axle nut loosely on with wheel to lower the car to roll it forward as the front wheels where on the compressor line, and was left down on the ground with the rear axle bolt loose and wheel on the ground. Could I have damaged the small o-ring or something else in being and idiot and doing so.

That small O-ring on the shaft is all that stops the oil sluicing out along the axle.
The lip seal should stop it getting past the OD of the spacer.
The chamfer on the outer spacer faces inboard,
and is for the O-ring to squish it down on the axle when the nut is tight .
Some of the O-rings in kits you can buy are too big, and can split when the spacer is clamped down.
Some O-rings are just cheap and have excess flashing which makes for no smooth surface to seal.
I like to use some Curil on the O-ring and usually get a nicer O-ring from the bearing shop.
I would guess you can still get Elring kits and these should be better quality.

You may have just damaged the O-ring if it caught under the spacer as to torqued up the big nut.
