I'm not a particularly mechanically minded person, so im hoping to learn a few basics before i take my fastback to someone to get fixed (and to potentially save myself from getting ripped off)

My 1600 TLE 1971 fastback seems to be using more petrol than i feel it should, having driven a beetle many years ago, and the exhaust fumes have a distinct petrol smell (more than other aircooled cars ive smelt!)

Could it be the valve timing is off? I bought the car last year from a guy who rebuilt the engine, it runs pretty smoothly but i thought the injected fuel system was meant to increase efficiency (i have no idea what my mpg is im affraid - got a sticky fuel gauge so never want to run it too low on fuel)

Also while im here, should the oil breather 'exhaust' connect up to the air filter? I notice on my stock breather the hose is missing...

Just trying to minimise the environmental impact of my car!!!!!!

I would check timing and valves to be sure.

Have a read here

I wouldnt be expecting a 30 year old fuel injection to be more economical than a beetle.
If you are remembering a 64 1200 beetle then forget it. Any 1600 is going to be thirstier

The stock breather connects to the carb - yes.
Futue te ipsum!!!

Type 3s weigh a ton or one n half tons at least the weight is the problem

they are always HEAVY on fuel no matter what you do

You could try fitting smaller main jets and syncoing the carbies as well
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

You can sort it out all you like unfortunatly it will still be the weight problem
they weigh 1 1/2 tons take 6 people to lift a bare type 3 body shell compared to 2 for a Bug

Yers i would fit a new updated putor using both fuel and ignition and possibly some more sensors as well
